Test 1
Questions 14-18
For each question, choose the correct answer.
A special way to see the city
Sometimes the best holidays are the ones that surprise you!
Sixteen-year-old Yara was on a city holiday with her parents last week. Usually, when they go away, her family takes big tour buses to visit famous places. But Yara didn't want to do that this time. She learns about the environment at school, so she knows buses can put dirty air into the sky. She asked her parents to rent bicycles instead.
At first, her dad wasn't sure, but he soon agreed. On Tuesday morning, they picked up three lovely red bikes from a small shop near their hotel. They rode through the quiet streets and saw a lot of beautiful old buildings. It was much faster than walking, and Yara felt very pleased because they were getting some great exercise.
However, after two hours, the weather suddenly changed. The sky went dark, and it started raining very heavily. The family was quite far from their hotel. Yara's mum quickly checked her bag, but they didn't have any umbrellas or raincoats with them. They were getting very wet and cold in the street.
They quickly left the street and ran inside a small café to hide from the bad weather. They sat by a big window, watched the rain, and ordered some hot chocolate. It was the most delicious hot drink Yara ever had!
When the rain finally stopped, they rode back to the shop. Yara's parents said they loved the adventure. They felt glad that they didn't take a polluting bus. For their next holiday, Yara wants to plan a cycling trip in the mountains, and she is going to make sure they pack some good raincoats!
14 Why did Yara ask her parents to rent bicycles?
A She wanted to do something good for the environment.
B She thought that tour buses were too expensive.
C She needed to learn about them for a school project.
15 How did Yara feel about riding the bikes in the city?
A surprised because the streets were so quiet
B worried because they rode faster than people walking
C happy because it was good for her body
16 What was the problem when the weather changed?
A They couldn't find their way back to the hotel.
B They didn't have anything to keep them dry.
C Yara's mother lost her bag in the rain.
17 What did the family do in the café?
A They waited for the rain to end.
B They bought some delicious food.
C They tried to dry their wet clothes.
18 What is Yara planning to do for her next holiday?
A buy a new raincoat for her dad
B ride bicycles in a different place
C take a tour bus to the mountains
Answer Key & Explanations
14 A - Explanation: The correct answer is A because Yara knows "buses can put dirty air into the sky" and learns about the environment, so she chose bikes instead. Option B is wrong because the text does not mention the cost of the buses. Option C is a partial truth; she learns about the environment at school, but she isn't doing a project on the holiday.
15 C - Explanation: The correct answer is C because Yara felt "very pleased [happy] because they were getting some great exercise [good for her body]". Option A is a partial truth; the streets were quiet, but she wasn't surprised by this. Option B is wrong logic; going faster than walking was a good thing, and she wasn't worried about it.
16 B - Explanation: The correct answer is B because they "didn't have any umbrellas or raincoats with them". Option A is wrong because they were far from the hotel, but the text doesn't say they were lost. Option C is a partial truth; Yara's mother checked her bag, but she didn't lose it.
17 A - Explanation: The correct answer is A because they went inside to "hide from the bad weather" and stayed until "the rain finally stopped". Option B is wrong logic; they bought a hot drink (chocolate), not food. Option C is wrong because drying clothes is not mentioned in the text.
18 B - Explanation: The correct answer is B because the final paragraph says Yara wants to "plan a cycling trip in the mountains" (a different place). Option A is a partial truth; she plans to "pack some good raincoats", but she isn't specifically buying one for her dad. Option C is wrong logic; they are going to the mountains, but they will cycle, not take a bus.
Test 2
Questions 14-18
For each question, choose the correct answer.
A mistake in the wild
Fifteen-year-old Zack writes about a safari trip in Kenya.
Hi, I'm Zack, and I am 15 years old. Last month, I went on an amazing holiday to Kenya with my family. We went on a safari because we wanted to see wild animals. I love photography, so my biggest dream was to take lots of great photos of elephants.
On our first day, we drove through the park in a big jeep with a guide. Suddenly, our guide stopped the car. He pointed to some trees, and a large family of elephants walked out. I was so excited! I quickly picked up my camera and opened the car window to get a better look at them.
But then, something bad happened. When I lifted my camera, the small plastic cover for my camera lens fell off. It dropped out of the window and landed on the dirt road. I felt terrible. I knew that leaving plastic in the park is very dangerous for the animals, but I couldn't open my door to get it because wild animals were near us.
I told our driver about my mistake. He was very kind and told me not to worry. He watched the elephants carefully. When they walked far away from our car, he quickly opened his door, stepped onto the road, and picked up my plastic cover. I was so happy to have it back!
Now I know that I have to be much more careful when I visit nature. It is so important to keep wild places clean and safe. Next time I go on a safari, I am going to tie the camera cover to my bag with a strong piece of string!
14 What did Zack most want to do on his holiday?
A learn how to be a professional photographer
B travel around the country with his friends
C take pictures of a certain wild animal
15 Why did Zack open the window of the jeep?
A He wanted to see the elephants more clearly.
B He felt too hot inside the big car.
C He needed to point his camera at the guide.
16 Why was Zack worried when the plastic cover fell on the road?
A His expensive camera was now broken.
B The plastic could be bad for the animals.
C The guide was angry with him for dropping it.
17 How did Zack get his camera cover back?
A The driver waited for the elephants to leave and then got it.
B The driver moved the jeep far away from the elephants.
C The driver asked Zack to step onto the dirt road and get it.
18 What is Zack going to do on his next trip?
A help clean up dirty parks in Kenya
B fasten his camera cover to his bag
C buy a new camera cover with a string
Answer Key & Explanations
14 C - Explanation: The correct answer is C because Zack says his "biggest dream was to take lots of great photos of elephants." Option A is wrong logic; he loves photography, but the text doesn't say he wants to be a professional. Option B is a partial truth mixed with wrong logic; he went on holiday to Kenya, but he travelled with his family, not his friends.
15 A - Explanation: The correct answer is A because the text says he opened the car window "to get a better look at them." Option B is wrong logic and is not mentioned in the text. Option C is a wrong reference; the guide pointed at the trees, but Zack didn't point his camera at the guide.
16 B - Explanation: The correct answer is B because Zack knew that "leaving plastic in the park is very dangerous for the animals." Option A is wrong logic; only the small plastic cover fell, not the camera itself. Option C is wrong logic; the text says the driver (guide) was "very kind and told me not to worry," not angry.
17 A - Explanation: The correct answer is A because the text says the driver watched the elephants carefully and "When they walked far away from our car, he quickly opened his door... and picked up my plastic cover." Option B is a wrong reference; the elephants walked away, the driver didn't move the car. Option C is a partial truth mixed with a wrong reference; the driver stepped onto the road, not Zack.
18 B - Explanation: The correct answer is B because in the final paragraph Zack says, "I am going to tie the camera cover to my bag." Option A is a partial truth; he thinks it is important to keep places clean, but this is a general thought, not his specific plan for his next trip. Option C is wrong logic; he is going to tie his current cover with a piece of string, not buy a new one.
Test 3
Questions 14-18
For each question, choose the correct answer.
A surprise under the sea
Thirteen-year-old Amy writes about her trip to the Great Barrier Reef.
My name is Amy and I am 13 years old. Last month, my family and I travelled to Australia for a special holiday. I was very excited because we planned to visit the Great Barrier Reef. It is a famous place with lots of beautiful coral and sea life. I really wanted to try snorkelling there, but I had never done it before. I only knew how to swim in a normal pool.
On the day of our trip, we went out on a large boat. The sun was quite hot and the water looked amazing. I put on my new mask and jumped into the sea with my parents. At first, it was great. I looked down at the sand at the bottom of the sea. But suddenly, some water went inside my mask and up my nose.
I didn't know what to do. I couldn't see anything through the glass, and I started to feel very afraid. I didn't want to stay in the water anymore, so I quickly swam away from my parents and back to the boat. I sat down on a seat and took my mask off. I felt sad because I thought my fun snorkelling trip was finished.
Then, a friendly instructor on the boat came to talk to me. She showed me a very easy way to get the water out of my mask while I was swimming. I decided to be brave and try one more time. I went back into the sea and it was brilliant! I didn't get any water in my mask, and I even saw a huge, bright blue fish. Next summer, I hope to go snorkelling again in a completely different country.
14 Why was Amy excited about her holiday?
A She wanted to do a new activity.
B She wanted to travel without her parents.
C She wanted to learn about famous places.
15 What happened when Amy first went into the sea?
A The water was too cold for her.
B She had a problem with her equipment.
C She lost her parents in the water.
16 Why did Amy go back to the boat?
A She was tired of swimming.
B She wanted to take off her mask.
C She felt scared in the water.
17 How did the instructor help Amy?
A She gave Amy a better mask to use.
B She explained how to fix the problem.
C She swam in the sea next to Amy.
18 What does Amy want to do in the future?
A look for the same blue fish
B try snorkelling in a new place
C learn to work as an instructor
Answer Key & Explanations
14 A - Explanation: In the first paragraph, Amy says, "I really wanted to try snorkelling there, but I had never done it before." Wanting to try something you have never done before means wanting to do a new activity. Option B is wrong logic because she travelled with her family. Option C is a partial truth trap; the Great Barrier Reef is a famous place, but she went there to try snorkelling, not to study or learn facts about it.
15 B - Explanation: In the second paragraph, Amy says, "some water went inside my mask". A mask is a piece of equipment, and getting water inside it is a problem, making B the correct answer. Option A is wrong logic because the text says the sun was hot, but does not mention the water being cold. Option C is a partial truth trap; she jumped in with her parents, but she didn't lose them.
16 C - Explanation: In the third paragraph, Amy says, "I started to feel very afraid," which means she felt scared. Option A is a wrong logic trap; she swam quickly back to the boat, but she never says she was tired. Option B is a chronological trap; she did take her mask off, but she did this after she returned to the boat, it was not the reason she swam back.
17 B - Explanation: In the fourth paragraph, Amy explains that the instructor "showed me a very easy way to get the water out of my mask". This means she explained how to fix the problem. Option A is a wrong logic trap; the instructor showed her what to do, but did not give her a new mask. Option C is a wrong reference; the instructor talked to Amy on the boat, she didn't swim next to her.
18 B - Explanation: In the final paragraph, Amy states, "Next summer, I hope to go snorkelling again in a completely different country." This means she wants to try it in a new place. Option A uses words from the text (blue fish) but creates a false meaning, as she doesn't say she will look for it again. Option C is a wrong reference trap; she talked to an instructor, but she does not say she wants to become one.
