Questions 14-18

For each question, choose the correct answer.

Sleeping in the trees!

12-year-old Ben writes about his surprise weekend holiday.

My name is Ben, and I am 12 years old. Last weekend, my parents planned a special trip for our family. They didn't tell my sister and me where we were going. After a long drive, we arrived in a dark forest. I looked up and saw a beautiful wooden house in the trees. We were going to sleep in a treehouse! I felt very excited.

Inside the treehouse, there was a small bedroom and a balcony. The best thing about our unusual hotel was the view. In the morning, I sat outside and watched the birds. They flew very close to us. At home, I only see cars and buses from my window, so this was amazing. I took a lot of great photos with my camera.

However, there was one problem. The treehouse didn't have a bathroom. The bathroom was in a different building on the ground. To get there, you had to climb down a long wooden ladder. During the day, this was fun. But I woke up at midnight and needed to go. It was a bit scary because the ladder moved a little and it was too dark to see my feet.

The next morning, I told my dad about my scary climb. He said we should bring a big torch next time. I think that is a great idea. If you want to stay in a treehouse, you really must pack a strong light. It makes the night-time climbs much safer. Overall, I loved sleeping in the trees and I hope we can go back soon!

14   Why was Ben surprised at the start of the trip?

A He didn't know where the family was travelling to.

B He had to drive through a very dark forest.

C He helped his parents plan a special weekend.

15   What did Ben enjoy most about the treehouse?

A watching the cars and buses from his window

B having a very large bedroom with a balcony

C getting to see the birds from so close

16   Why was Ben afraid in the middle of the night?

A He couldn't find the bathroom building on the ground.

B It was difficult to see the ladder in the dark.

C The long wooden ladder was broken.

17   What advice does Ben give to his readers?

A Ask someone to help you climb down at night.

B Remember to take something to help you see.

C Try to only use the bathroom during the day.

18   What is the best title for this text?

A How to build a home in the forest

B A very unusual place to stay

C The scariest night of my life

Answer Key & Explanations

14 A - Explanation: The text says, "They didn't tell my sister and me where we were going." This means he didn't know the destination (Option A). Option B is a partial truth; they did drive to a dark forest, but this is not why it was a surprise. Option C is wrong logic; his parents planned the trip, not Ben.

15 C - Explanation: In paragraph 2, Ben says "The best thing... was the view" and mentions the birds "flew very close to us." This makes C the correct answer. Option A is wrong logic; he sees cars and buses at home, not at the treehouse. Option B is a partial truth trap; the text says the treehouse had a small bedroom, not a large one.

16 B - Explanation: Paragraph 3 says, "It was a bit scary because... it was too dark to see my feet." This matches it being difficult to see the ladder in the dark (Option B). Option A is wrong logic; he knew where the bathroom was, he just had trouble climbing down to it. Option C is wrong logic; the ladder moved a little, but the text doesn't say it was broken.

17 B - Explanation: In the final paragraph, Ben says, "If you want to stay in a treehouse, you really must pack a strong light." This means taking something to help you see (Option B). Option A is wrong logic; he talked to his dad the next morning, but doesn't advise asking for help to climb. Option C is a partial truth; he says the climb was fun during the day, but he doesn't tell readers to avoid the bathroom at night.

18 B - Explanation: The text is a review of a fun but different type of hotel (a treehouse), making "A very unusual place to stay" the best title. Option A is wrong logic; Ben is visiting a hotel, not building a house. Option C is a partial truth trap; he was a bit scared at night, but he says he "loved sleeping in the trees," so it wasn't a terrible or completely scary experience overall.

    Test 2

    Questions 14-18

For each question, choose the correct answer.

    The sea glass collector

13-year-old Clara writes about a hobby she started on holiday.

Hi, I’m Clara and I am 13 years old. Last month, my family and I went on a long road trip. We drove along the coast and visited many different beaches. During the trip, I started a new hobby. I decided to collect sea glass. Sea glass is just old pieces of broken glass, but the ocean water makes them very smooth and pretty.

Every time we stopped at a new beach, I spent hours looking for glass in the sand. I found many green and white pieces, but my favourite was a special dark blue one. I put all my sea glass in a small cloth bag. I carried it everywhere with me because I didn't want to lose it.

One afternoon, we visited a beautiful rocky beach. I wanted to take some photos of the sea, so I put my little bag on a large rock. Then, I walked along the beach to look for more glass. I completely forgot about my bag. After a while, I noticed that the water was getting higher.

Suddenly, I looked back at the rock. The waves were very big and the water was almost touching my bag! The sea nearly washed all my beautiful glass away. I ran across the sand as fast as I could and grabbed my bag just in time. I felt so happy that it was safe.

When we finally arrived back home, I washed all my sea glass carefully. Then, I used my favourite blue and green pieces to make a beautiful necklace. I am going to wear it to school on Monday because I want to show it to my friends.

14   In the first paragraph, what does Clara say about her holiday?

A She started doing a new activity.

B She learned how to make glass smooth.

C She broke some glass on the beach.

15   What do we learn about Clara's cloth bag?

A She only put her favourite blue glass in it.

B She bought it while she was on the trip.

C She always kept it with her.

16   Why did Clara leave her bag on the rock?

A She was tired of carrying it.

B She wanted to use her camera.

C She wanted to walk in the water.

17   When the water got higher, Clara

A lost all of her sea glass in the big waves.

B asked her family to run and get her bag.

C got to her bag before the sea took it.

18   What is Clara planning to do on Monday?

A give a beautiful necklace to her friends

B let her classmates see what she made

C wash the sea glass she found on the trip

    Answer Key & Explanations

14 A - Explanation: In the first paragraph, Clara says "I started a new hobby," which matches A (a new activity). B is wrong logic because the text says the "ocean water" makes the glass smooth, not Clara. C is wrong logic because she collected already-broken glass; she didn't break it herself.

15 C - Explanation: In the second paragraph, Clara states, "I carried it everywhere with me," which means she always kept it with her (C). A is a partial truth trap; she did have a favourite blue piece, but she put "all" her sea glass in the bag, not just the blue one. B is not mentioned in the text.

16 B - Explanation: The third paragraph says, "I wanted to take some photos of the sea, so I put my little bag on a large rock," matching B. A is a plausible distractor but is not supported by the text. C is a wrong logic trap; she walked along the beach, but there is no mention of her putting the bag down specifically to go in the water.

17 C - Explanation: The fourth paragraph explains that she "grabbed my bag just in time," meaning she got it before the sea washed it away (C). A is wrong logic because the sea "nearly" (almost) washed it away, but she saved it. B is a wrong reference trap; she ran and got it herself, without asking her family for help.

18 B - Explanation: In the final paragraph, Clara says she is going to wear her new necklace to school "because I want to show it to my friends," which matches B (let her classmates see what she made). A is a wrong logic trap; she wants to show it to them, not give it to them. C is a wrong timeline trap; she already washed the glass when she "arrived back home," not on Monday.

      Test 3

      Questions 14-18

For each question, choose the correct answer.

      A better choice for tourists

Sixteen-year-old Dean shares his opinion on seeing animals on holiday.

Hi, I’m Dean and I am 16 years old. I love travelling to different countries with my parents. On our holidays, we often see adverts for special shows with wild animals. Lots of tourists pay a lot of money to watch them. However, I really believe that we need to stop buying tickets for these kinds of shows. It is not a good way to spend your time.

When you watch an animal show, it usually looks like great fun. People laugh and clap when they see big animals like tigers doing clever tricks. But there is a very sad side to this. After the show finishes, the animals do not go back to a nice place. They are usually kept in terrible, small cages. They cannot run or play like they do in the wild.

I think many tourists do not know about this problem when they buy their tickets. They just want to take exciting photos to show their friends back home. But they need to learn the truth about these places. We must remember that wild animals are not actors. They shouldn't live in small spaces just to make us happy. Animals need freedom.

So, what should you do on your next trip? I strongly advise you to spend your money on visiting national parks instead. In these beautiful places, you can see amazing animals living in their natural homes. You might have to wait quietly for a long time to see them, but it is much better for the animals. And I promise, it is a much more exciting adventure for you, too!

14   What does Dean think about wild animal shows on holiday?

A Tourists should not pay to go to them.

B They are too expensive for families to visit.

C They are the best way to spend holiday time.

15   Why does Dean feel sad about the tigers in the shows?

A They do not want to learn clever tricks.

B They have to live in very little spaces.

C They do not like going back to the wild.

16   What does Dean say about tourists who go to the shows?

A They want to become actors in the future.

B They are unhappy with the photos they take.

C They do not know how the animals really live.

17   What is Dean's advice for tourists on their next trip?

A Go to places where animals live naturally.

B Give some money to help the national parks.

C Wait quietly to watch the animal shows.

18   What is the best title for this blog post?

A How to take great photos in national parks

B A better way to see wild animals on holiday

C The cleverest wild animals in the world

      Answer Key & Explanations

14 A - Explanation: In the first paragraph, Dean says, "we need to stop buying tickets for these kinds of shows." Option A correctly matches this idea. Option B is a partial truth trap; the text mentions tourists "pay a lot of money" and he travels with his "parents" (family), but he doesn't say the shows are too expensive. Option C is the opposite of the text, as Dean says it is "not a good way to spend your time".

15 B - Explanation: In the second paragraph, Dean explains that after the show, the animals are "kept in terrible, small cages." Option B paraphrases this as living in "very little spaces". Option A is wrong logic; the text says they do clever tricks, not that they don't want to learn them. Option C is a wrong fact; the text says they cannot play "like they do in the wild", not that they refuse to go back.

16 C - Explanation: In the third paragraph, Dean says, "many tourists do not know about this problem... they need to learn the truth". Option C accurately paraphrases this. Option A is a wrong reference trap; Dean says "wild animals are not actors", not that the tourists want to be actors. Option B is wrong logic; tourists want to "take exciting photos", they are not unhappy with them.

17 A - Explanation: In the fourth paragraph, Dean advises tourists to visit national parks to "see amazing animals living in their natural homes." This perfectly matches option A. Option B is a partial truth trap; he says to "spend your money on visiting" the parks, but doesn't mention just giving money to help them. Option C is a wrong reference trap; he says you have to "wait quietly" in the national parks, not at the animal shows.

18 B - Explanation: As an opinion blog, the best title reflects the main idea of the whole text: tourists should stop going to shows and instead see animals in national parks where they belong. Option B covers this message perfectly. Option A is a minor detail from paragraph 3 (taking photos). Option C uses words from the text ("clever"), but the text is about animal welfare, not how smart animals are.
