Test 1

Questions 14-18

For each question, choose the correct answer.

From the sofa to five kilometres

15-year-old Rose writes about learning to run with her mother.

My name is Rose, and I am 15 years old. My mum and I never did any exercise. We spent a lot of time watching television on the sofa. But earlier this year, we decided that we wanted to get fit and healthy together. We found a special app on my mobile phone. It helps beginners to go from doing nothing to running five kilometres in just nine weeks.

We started going to our local park every Tuesday and Thursday. The phone app was very easy to use. A friendly voice told us exactly when to walk and when to run. For the first two weeks, the running time was very short, so we felt quite happy and relaxed.

However, the third week was much harder because we had to run for a longer time. After our run on Thursday, my mum sat on the grass. She said her legs hurt too much and she felt really tired. She wanted to stop doing the running plan and just go back to walking our family dog instead.

I knew we could finish the nine weeks, so I tried to help. Before our next run, I found some fast, happy music on the internet and put it on her phone. When we ran with the loud music, my mum forgot about her tired legs. She actually smiled and didn't want to stop at all!

We didn't give up, and last Sunday, we ran in a real five-kilometre race in our town. We ran the whole way and got beautiful medals at the end. We are extremely proud of ourselves. Next month, we are going to join a local running club to meet other people who love running!

14   Why did Rose and her mum start using the phone app?

A They wanted to learn how to use a new mobile phone.

B They needed to find a way to improve their health.

C They wanted something fun to do while sitting on the sofa.

15   How did they feel during the first two weeks of the plan?

A tired because they visited the park every day

B happy to talk to a friendly person on the phone

C pleased because they didn't have to run for very long

16   What problem did Rose's mum have in the third week?

A She wanted to spend more time walking the dog.

B She hurt her legs because she fell on the grass.

C She felt a lot of pain and wanted to stop the plan.

17   What did Rose do to help her mum?

A She put some fast music on her mum's phone.

B She bought her mum a new phone from the internet.

C She told her mum to smile and forget about the pain.

18   What are Rose and her mum planning to do next month?

A enter another five-kilometre race in their town

B become members of a sports group for runners

C show the beautiful medals they won to other people

Answer Key & Explanations

14 B - Explanation: In the first paragraph, Rose says, "we decided that we wanted to get fit and healthy together. We found a special app..." This matches Option B (improve their health). Option A is a wrong logic trap; they used the phone app to exercise, not to learn how to use a phone. Option C is a partial truth trap; they used to sit on the sofa, but the app was to help them run outside, not to use on the sofa.

15 C - Explanation: In the second paragraph, Rose explains, "For the first two weeks, the running time was very short, so we felt quite happy and relaxed." This matches Option C. Option A is a wrong truth trap; they went to the park on Tuesday and Thursday, not every day, and they were not tired yet. Option B is a wrong logic trap; they listened to a "friendly voice" recorded on the app, but they didn't talk to a real person on the phone.

16 C - Explanation: In the third paragraph, Rose says her mum's "legs hurt too much" and "She wanted to stop doing the running plan". This matches Option C (felt a lot of pain and wanted to stop). Option A is a partial truth trap; she wanted to go back to walking the dog, but this was a result of the pain, not the main problem itself. Option B is a wrong logic trap; she sat on the grass to rest, she didn't fall and hurt herself on it.

17 A - Explanation: In the fourth paragraph, Rose says she "found some fast, happy music on the internet and put it on her phone." This matches Option A. Option B is a wrong reference trap; she got music from the internet, but she didn't buy a new phone. Option C is a partial truth trap; her mum did smile and forget about her tired legs, but this happened because of the music, not because Rose told her to do it.

18 B - Explanation: In the final paragraph, Rose states their future plan: "Next month, we are going to join a local running club". This matches Option B (become members of a sports group). Option A is a wrong timing trap; they ran in a race "last Sunday," but they don't plan to do another one next month. Option C is an invented detail; they got beautiful medals, but she doesn't mention showing them to other people.

    Test 2

    Questions 14-18

For each question, choose the correct answer.

    A poorly pet

12-year-old Sam writes about a difficult week with his favourite animal.

I’m Sam and I’m twelve years old. I have a beautiful pet cat called Bella. She usually loves running around the garden and chasing small insects. But last week, something was wrong. Bella was very sick. She just slept all day on my bed and she didn't want to eat anything. She didn't even want to play with her favourite toy mouse. I felt so sad watching her.

Because Bella was so quiet and unhappy, I started to feel very worried. I love her a lot, and I didn't know how to help her. On Tuesday evening, I had to do a big maths project for school. I sat at my desk with my books, but my mind was completely full of thoughts about my cat. I couldn't concentrate on my homework at all, and I made lots of mistakes.

The next morning, my mum saw that I was very stressed. She told me not to worry, and we put Bella into a small basket. We drove to the animal doctor, the vet, in our town. The vet was very kind. She checked Bella carefully and said she had a bad stomach. She gave my mum some special medicine to put in Bella's food.

We went home and gave Bella her first dinner with the new medicine. Luckily, she ate it all! The next day, she started making a happy sound again and wanted to play. Seeing her happy made all my awful stress disappear immediately. Now I know that if my pet is sick again, I will just ask a vet for help straight away!

14   How did Sam know his cat was sick?

A She was not interested in her food or games.

B She stayed out in the garden all day.

C She broke her favourite toy mouse.

15   What problem did Sam have on Tuesday evening?

A His maths teacher gave him too many projects.

B He couldn't think clearly about his school work.

C He lost the books he needed for his homework.

16   When they visited the animal doctor, the doctor

A gave Sam some medicine to drink.

B asked Sam's mum to buy a new basket.

C told them what was wrong with the cat.

17   How did Sam feel the day after the visit to the doctor?

A worried because Bella didn't finish her dinner

B glad because his cat was acting normally again

C upset because he had to give Bella her medicine

18   What does Sam plan to do in the future?

A buy more toys for Bella to keep her happy

B giveBella medicine every day to stop her getting ill

C take his cat to the doctor immediately if she is sick

    Answer Key & Explanations

14 A - Explanation: In paragraph 1, Sam explains that Bella "didn't want to eat anything" and "didn't even want to play". Option A correctly paraphrases this. Option B is a wrong timeline trap; she usually loves the garden, but she stayed on his bed when she was sick. Option C is a wrong logic trap; she didn't want to play with her toy mouse, but she didn't break it.

15 B - Explanation: In paragraph 2, Sam says his mind was full of thoughts about his cat and he "couldn't concentrate on my homework at all". Option B accurately matches this. Option A is a wrong reference trap; he had a big maths project, but the teacher giving him too much work wasn't the problem. Option C is a wrong logic trap; he sat at his desk "with my books", so he didn't lose them.

16 C - Explanation: In paragraph 3, the vet "checked Bella carefully and said she had a bad stomach." Option C correctly paraphrases telling them what was wrong. Option A is a wrong reference trap; the vet gave medicine, but it was for the cat's food, not for Sam to drink. Option B is a wrong logic trap; they brought Bella in a small basket, but the vet didn't ask them to buy a new one.

17 B - Explanation: In paragraph 4, Sam says Bella made a happy sound and wanted to play, which made "all my awful stress disappear immediately." Option B perfectly reflects this happy feeling. Option A is wrong logic; he says "Luckily, she ate it all!", so she did finish her dinner. Option C is a wrong logic trap; giving the medicine helped the cat, and Sam felt happy, not upset.

18 C - Explanation: In the final paragraph, Sam says, "Now I know that if my pet is sick again, I will just ask a vet for help straight away!" Option C correctly paraphrases this future plan. Option A is wrong logic; the text doesn't mention buying new toys in the future. Option B is a partial truth trap; the medicine helped Bella this time, but he doesn't say he will give it to her every day forever.

      Test 3

      Questions 14-18

For each question, choose the correct answer.

      Loud and proud!

Tina, 14, writes a funny blog post about playing school sports.

Hi, I’m Tina, and I’m 14 years old. I play in the school basketball team, and we have matches every Friday evening. I love playing sports, but today I want to write a blog post about something that is a little bit funny, but also a problem. It is about parents who shout too loudly when they watch us play!

My dad comes to every basketball match I play. He usually sits near the front so he can see everything. It is really great to have a parent there to support me. I always feel happy when I see him before the game begins. He always brings a bottle of water and some nice snacks for me to eat after the match.

However, when the game starts, things change. When I get the ball, my dad stands up and shouts my name very loudly. He tells me to run faster and throw the ball. It is so loud that everyone in the sports hall turns around to look at him. I feel incredibly embarrassed when all the other students and parents stare at my dad!

I know that many other teenagers have the same problem with their mums and dads. If your parents shout at your games, I have some good advice for you. Just try your best to ignore the loud noise while you are playing. Remember that they don't want to make you feel bad. They just want to see you win the game!

14   Why is Tina writing this blog post?

A to talk about parents making too much noise at games

B to explain why she loves playing basketball on Fridays

C to invite more parents to watch her school team play

15   How does Tina feel about her dad coming to her matches?

A surprised because he always sits at the front

B angry because he eats her post-match snacks

C pleased that he is there to watch and support her

16   What happens when Tina gets the basketball?

A She feels too embarrassed to throw the ball.

B Her dad's shouting makes everyone look at him.

C The other students start shouting her name loudly.

17   What does Tina advise other players to do?

A Pay no attention to the noise their parents make.

B Tell their parents that they are making them feel bad.

C Ask their parents to stay at home during the game.

18   What is the best title for this blog post?

A How to win your next school basketball game

B Dealing with noisy parents at sports matches

C Why parents should stop watching school sports

      Answer Key & Explanations

14 A - Explanation: In the first paragraph, Tina says she wants to write a blog post "about parents who shout too loudly when they watch us play!" (talk about parents making too much noise). B is a partial truth trap; she mentions playing basketball on Fridays, but this isn't her main reason for writing. C is wrong logic; she doesn't invite parents to come, she is talking about a problem with the ones who already go to the matches.

15 C - Explanation: In the second paragraph, Tina says, "It is really great to have a parent there to support me. I always feel happy when I see him" (pleased that he is there to watch). A is a partial truth trap; he does sit at the front, but she isn't surprised by it, she expects it. B is wrong logic; he brings snacks for her to eat, he doesn't eat them himself.

16 B - Explanation: In the third paragraph, Tina says, "It is so loud that everyone in the sports hall turns around to look at him" (his shouting makes everyone look). A is a wrong detail trap; she feels embarrassed because people stare at her dad, but she doesn't say she is too embarrassed to throw the ball. C is a wrong reference trap; her dad shouts her name, the other students just turn and stare.

17 A - Explanation: In the final paragraph, Tina advises players to "ignore the loud noise while you are playing" (pay no attention to it). B is wrong logic; she explicitly says parents don't want to make you feel bad. C is wrong logic; she wants players to ignore the noise, not tell their parents to stay at home.

18 B - Explanation: This is a global question. The entire text is a funny blog post about how embarrassing it is when parents shout at school matches, and gives advice on how to handle it. A is a partial truth trap; she talks about basketball games, but gives no tips on how to play better or win. C is wrong logic; she says it is "great to have a parent there to support me", so she doesn't want them to stop coming.
