Questions 14-18
For each question, choose the correct answer.
A special souvenir
Sometimes getting dirty is the best way to have fun!
Fourteen-year-old Iris loves art and drawing. Last month, she went on a weekend trip with her parents. They travelled to a beautiful old village in the mountains. This village is famous for making amazing cups and plates from clay. Iris was very excited about the trip because she wanted to make her own special bowl to take home.
On Saturday morning, they visited a small art school. A friendly teacher showed Iris how to use a machine called a spinning wheel. He put a large piece of soft, wet clay on the wheel and turned it on. The machine started to go around very fast. The teacher told Iris to use her hands to shape the clay.
At first, Iris did it gently, and her bowl looked great. But then, she decided to make it a bit deeper. She pushed the wet clay much too hard. Suddenly, a big piece of the clay flew off the machine! It hit Iris right in the middle of her clean white shirt. It made a terrible mess.
Iris was quite surprised, but she didn't feel angry or sad. The teacher stopped the machine and quickly cleaned her hands. He gave her some more clay and helped her to try again. This time, Iris was much more careful. She couldn't make a big bowl, but she successfully made a lovely small cup instead.
When the cup was finished, Iris felt very proud. Her shirt was completely dirty, but she didn't care at all. She had a fantastic time making her souvenir. Because she loved the experience so much, Iris is going to start a weekly pottery club at her school. She wants to teach her classmates how to make things from clay!
14 Why was Iris excited about visiting the village?
A She hoped to create something to keep.
B She wanted to buy some amazing cups and plates.
C She needed to do some drawing for an art project.
15 What did the teacher do at the art school?
A He shaped the clay with his own hands.
B He turned the spinning wheel on very slowly.
C He put some wet clay on the machine for Iris.
16 Why did the clay fly onto Iris's shirt?
A The spinning wheel started moving too fast.
B She used too much force with her hands.
C She dropped a large piece of clay on her clothes.
17 What happened when Iris tried again?
A She managed to make a different object.
B She washed her dirty shirt with water.
C She stopped the machine by herself.
18 What is Iris planning to do next?
A take her friends on a trip to the old village
B make some clay bowls for her teachers
C begin a new group for students at her school
Answer Key & Explanations
14 A - Explanation: The correct answer is A because the text says Iris "wanted to make her own special bowl to take home" (create something to keep). Option B is wrong logic; the village is famous for making cups and plates, but Iris wanted to make her own, not buy them. Option C is a partial truth trap; Iris loves drawing, but she didn't go to the village to draw for a project.
15 C - Explanation: The correct answer is C because the text states that the teacher "put a large piece of soft, wet clay on the wheel". Option A is a wrong reference trap; the teacher told Iris to shape the clay with her hands, he didn't do it himself. Option B is a wrong logic trap; the teacher turned the machine on, but it went "very fast," not slowly.
16 B - Explanation: The correct answer is B because Iris "pushed the wet clay much too hard" (used too much force). Option A is a partial truth trap; the wheel was moving fast, but that wasn't the reason the clay flew off—it happened because she pushed too hard. Option C is wrong logic; the clay flew off the machine, she didn't drop it.
17 A - Explanation: The correct answer is A because when Iris tried again, she couldn't make a bowl but "successfully made a lovely small cup instead" (a different object). Option B is wrong logic; the text says the teacher cleaned her hands, but her shirt remained completely dirty. Option C is a wrong reference trap; the teacher stopped the machine, not Iris.
18 C - Explanation: The correct answer is C because in the final paragraph, Iris says she is going to "start a weekly pottery club at her school" to teach her classmates (begin a new group for students). Option A is wrong logic; she wants to teach her friends at school, not take them to the village. Option B is a wrong reference trap; she wants to teach her classmates, not make bowls for her teachers.
Test 2
Questions 14-18
For each question, choose the correct answer.
Old clothes and no cameras!
Sixteen-year-old Jack writes a blog about his visit to a fashion museum.
My name is Jack, and I am 16 years old. Last month, I went on a fantastic summer holiday to Paris with my parents and my sister. While we were there, we visited a famous fashion museum in the centre of the city. It was full of beautiful dresses from the past. I love reading about history and clothes, so I decided to write this blog to tell other teenagers about my interesting visit.
The museum was really amazing. I love art and fashion, so I spent a long time looking at all the old clothes. The historical dresses were incredibly beautiful, and some of them were more than two hundred years old! The old designs were full of bright colours and interesting shapes. Looking at them gave me lots of great ideas for my own school art projects. It was definitely the best part of my holiday.
However, there was one big problem during our visit. When I saw my favourite dress, I wanted to take a picture of it with my mobile phone. But a friendly museum worker told me that visitors cannot take any photos inside the building. This was very annoying. I wanted to show the amazing clothes to my friends back home, but I had to put my phone away in my pocket.
Overall, I think the fashion museum is a brilliant place to visit if you are interested in clothes and history. But I have an important piece of advice for future visitors. You should definitely bring a small notebook and a pencil in your bag. If you do this, you can sit down and quickly draw your favourite dresses. Then, you will have a picture to keep, and you will never forget the beautiful designs!
14 Why did Jack decide to write this blog?
A to share his experience of visiting a museum
B to explain the history of clothes in Paris
C to tell his parents about his summer holiday
15 What did Jack like about the historical dresses?
A He learned how to make them for an art project.
B They gave him some good ideas for his schoolwork.
C He spent over two hundred hours looking at them.
16 Why was Jack annoyed in the museum?
A A museum worker was unfriendly to him.
B He lost his phone from his pocket.
C He wasn't allowed to take pictures.
17 What advice does Jack give to future visitors?
A Take something to draw the clothes with.
B Buy a small picture to remember the designs.
C Write some notes about the history of the dresses.
18 What is the best title for this blog?
A The best places to go shopping for clothes in Paris
B How to take the perfect photograph on holiday
C A great museum, but find a new way to remember it
Answer Key & Explanations
14 A - Explanation: In the first paragraph, Jack says, "I decided to write this blog to tell other teenagers about my interesting visit." This perfectly matches option A (to share his experience). Option B is a partial truth trap; he mentions history and clothes in Paris, but he is reviewing a trip, not teaching history. Option C is a wrong reference trap; he travelled with his parents, so he isn't writing the blog to tell them about it.
15 B - Explanation: In the second paragraph, Jack says that looking at the dresses "gave me lots of great ideas for my own school art projects", which matches option B. Option A is a partial truth trap; he mentions an art project, but he did not learn how to make the clothes. Option C is a wrong logic trap; the text says the dresses were "two hundred years old", not that he spent two hundred hours looking at them.
16 C - Explanation: In the third paragraph, Jack explains that he was annoyed because "visitors cannot take any photos inside the building". This makes option C correct. Option A is a wrong logic trap; he was annoyed by the rule, but he clearly states it was a "friendly" museum worker. Option B is a partial truth trap; he mentions putting his phone in his pocket, but he didn't lose it.
17 A - Explanation: In the final paragraph, Jack advises visitors to "bring a small notebook and a pencil" so they can "quickly draw your favourite dresses". This matches option A. Option B is a wrong logic trap; he says visitors will "have a picture to keep" if they draw it themselves, not that they should buy one. Option C is a wrong logic trap; he tells them to use the notebook to draw, not to write notes about history.
18 C - Explanation: This is a global question. The blog is an opinion/review text about a brilliant museum that has a strict "no photos" rule, ending with Jack's advice to draw the dresses so you can remember them. Option C perfectly summarises this. Option A is a wrong logic trap; the text is about a museum, not shopping for clothes. Option B is wrong logic because the main problem in the text is that he couldn't take photographs at all.
Test 3
Questions 14-18
For each question, choose the correct answer.
Music for the road
Fifteen-year-old Kelly writes about a special road trip with her family.
Hi, I’m Kelly, and I am 15 years old. I love music, and I always listen to it when I travel. Last month, my family planned a long road trip through the desert. I really wanted the music to be perfect for this journey. So, I spent a whole week making a special digital playlist on my phone. I carefully chose songs that were great for the hot, dry places we were going to drive through.
We packed the car and started driving very early in the morning. At first, my parents and I just talked and looked out of the windows. After an hour, I decided it was time to share my music. I used a cable to connect my phone to the car radio. But suddenly, the radio made a terrible noise and stopped working completely. It was broken.
I felt incredibly disappointed. I worked so hard on my playlist, and I was excited to play my songs loudly for everyone. My dad tried to fix the radio, but he couldn't do it. For a long time, the car was very quiet, and the journey started to feel quite boring without any sound.
Then, I remembered something important. I looked inside my travel bag and found my small portable speaker! I put it on the front window and turned it on. The music was really clear and loud. We listened to my wonderful desert playlist and sang along together all afternoon. It was a fantastic day. Next time we go on a long trip, I am going to buy a better battery for my speaker so the music never stops!
14 Why did Kelly spend a week making a playlist?
A She wanted music that was right for the places they visited.
B She needed to learn some new songs for a family party.
C Her parents asked her to download some music on her phone.
15 What happened an hour after the family left home?
A The family stopped talking and fell asleep.
B Kelly couldn't find the cable for her mobile phone.
C A piece of equipment in the car broke.
16 How did Kelly feel about the broken radio?
A sad because her dad couldn't fix her phone
B unhappy because the others couldn't hear her playlist
C angry because the inside of the car was too noisy
17 How did Kelly solve the problem?
A She played the songs using something from her bag.
B She asked her parents to sing some songs with her.
C She bought a small speaker to put in the window.
18 What is Kelly planning to do before her next trip?
A make two different digital playlists on her phone
B get something to keep her speaker working longer
C pack her travel bag much more carefully
Answer Key & Explanations
14 A - Explanation: The correct answer is A because Kelly says she "carefully chose songs that were great for the hot, dry places" they were going to drive through. Option B is wrong logic and is not mentioned in the text. Option C is a partial truth mixed with a wrong reference; she made the playlist on her phone, but she did it because she wanted to, not because her parents asked her.
15 C - Explanation: The correct answer is C because the text states that "the radio made a terrible noise and stopped working completely." The radio is a piece of equipment. Option A is wrong logic; they talked at first, but the text never says they fell asleep. Option B is a partial truth; a cable is mentioned, but she didn't lose it (she used it to connect her phone).
16 B - Explanation: The correct answer is B because Kelly felt disappointed (unhappy) because she wanted to "play my songs loudly for everyone." Option A is a wrong reference; her dad tried to fix the radio, not her mobile phone. Option C is the opposite of the truth; she says the car was "very quiet," not too noisy.
17 A - Explanation: The correct answer is A because Kelly says, "I looked inside my travel bag and found my small portable speaker" and used it to play the music. Option B is a partial truth; they sang together, but she didn't fix the problem by asking them to sing. Option C is wrong logic; she already owned the speaker and found it in her bag, she didn't buy a new one.
18 B - Explanation: The correct answer is B because in the final sentence, Kelly states, "I am going to buy a better battery for my speaker so the music never stops!" Option A is wrong logic and is not mentioned in the text. Option C is a wrong reference; she found her speaker in her travel bag this time, but she does not mention any plans to pack her bag differently next time.
