Test 1
Questions 14-18
For each question, choose the correct answer.
A messy trip to the mountains
Travelling with animals isn't always easy!
Fourteen-year-old Eva loves animals. Last month, her family got a beautiful new puppy called Max. He is very friendly and loves playing in the garden at home. For the school holidays, Eva's parents decided to take the family on a long road trip to the mountains. They packed their bags, put Max in the back seat of the car with Eva, and started their journey early in the morning.
At first, the trip was great fun. They listened to music and watched the beautiful green fields go past the window. But after two hours, the road started going up into the mountains. It had lots of corners and was very bumpy. Eva noticed that little Max didn't look happy. He stopped playing with his toy and just lay down quietly.
Suddenly, Max felt very ill and was sick all over the back seat. It was a big mess! The whole car smelled terrible. Eva's brother covered his nose, and her dad had to open all the windows to let some fresh air inside. Eva felt very sorry for the poor puppy, but she didn't know how to help him.
Soon after, they saw a beautiful, quiet lake next to the road. Eva's dad quickly stopped the car. While her parents spent half an hour cleaning the seats, Eva took Max for a walk near the water. To her surprise, Max felt much better and immediately jumped into the lake! He loved swimming and playing in the cool water.
Max looked so happy and clean after his swim. Eva was pleased that her dog was okay. But next time they go on a long drive, Eva is going to ask her parents to give Max his breakfast after they arrive, not before they leave!
14 Why did the family travel to the mountains?
A to get a new puppy for Eva
B to have a holiday from school
C to look for a bigger garden
15 When they drove up into the mountains, Max
A watched the fields from the window.
B listened quietly to the music.
C didn't want to play with his toy.
16 What happened after Max was sick?
A Eva's dad let some air into the car.
B Eva's brother cleaned the back seat.
C Eva knew exactly what to do for him.
17 What did Eva's parents do at the lake?
A They washed the inside of the car.
B They went for a walk near the water.
C They swam with Max in the lake.
18 What is Eva going to do differently next time?
A make sure her dog stays clean in the car
B give her puppy his morning meal later
C ask her parents to stop driving so much
Answer Key & Explanations
14 B - Explanation: The correct answer is B because the text says they went to the mountains "For the school holidays". Option A is wrong logic; they already got the puppy before the trip. Option C is a partial truth; the text mentions the puppy playing in the garden at home, but they didn't travel to find a bigger one.
15 C - Explanation: The correct answer is C because the text states that Max "stopped playing with his toy and just lay down quietly." Option A is wrong reference; the family watched the fields, not Max. Option B is a partial truth; they listened to music earlier in the trip, but Max was lying down quietly because he felt ill, not to listen to music.
16 A - Explanation: The correct answer is A because Eva's dad "had to open all the windows to let some fresh air inside." Option B is wrong reference; Eva's brother covered his nose, but the parents cleaned the seats later. Option C is wrong logic; the text says Eva "didn't know how to help him."
17 A - Explanation: The correct answer is A because the text says "her parents spent half an hour cleaning the seats". Option B is wrong reference; Eva took Max for a walk, not her parents. Option C is wrong reference; Max jumped into the lake, but the parents did not swim with him.
18 B - Explanation: The correct answer is B because in the final paragraph, Eva plans to "give Max his breakfast after they arrive, not before they leave!" Option A is a partial truth; Max was clean after his swim, but Eva isn't planning a way to keep him clean in the car. Option C is wrong logic; she will ask her parents to change his feeding time, not to stop driving.
Test 2
Questions 14-18
For each question, choose the correct answer.
A scary moment at the museum
Fifteen-year-old Finn writes about a trip to London with his little brother.
Hi, I’m Finn and I’m 15 years old. Last weekend, my family went on a trip to London. My parents wanted to go shopping, so I took my eight-year-old brother, Leo, to a huge history museum. Leo loves old things, and I was excited to show him around. The museum was very crowded, so I told him to stay close to me.
We spent the first hour looking at old clothes and gold coins. Then, we walked into a room full of things from past wars. I saw a long, heavy sword in a glass box and stopped to read the information next to it. I talked to Leo about it, but he didn't answer. When I turned around, he wasn't there! I suddenly felt very worried.
I knew it was a bad idea to run all over the large building, so I tried to stay calm. I walked out of the room and looked down the long hall. Luckily, I saw a museum guard in a blue uniform. I quickly went to him and explained that my little brother was lost. The guard was very kind and used his radio to speak to the other workers.
A few minutes later, the guard smiled and said, "We found him!" He walked with me to the dinosaur room on the first floor. Leo was standing under a huge dinosaur skeleton, smiling and looking very happy. He didn't even know he was lost! I was so pleased to see him. Next time we visit a busy place, I am going to hold his hand the whole time!
14 Why were Finn and Leo at the museum without their parents?
A Their parents were shopping in the city.
B Their parents were tired of looking at old things.
C Their parents were lost in the crowded building.
15 When did Finn know that his brother was missing?
A after he stopped to look at a sword
B when they walked into the room about wars
C while he was looking at some gold coins
16 What did Finn do to find Leo?
A He ran quickly around the large building.
B He used a radio to call his parents.
C He asked a museum worker for help.
17 How did Leo feel when Finn found him?
A He was sad because his brother wasn't there.
B He was happy looking at the dinosaurs.
C He was frightened because he was lost.
18 What is Finn going to do on his next trip?
A only take his brother to quiet places
B visit the dinosaur room first
C hold onto his brother's hand
Answer Key & Explanations
14 A - Explanation: The correct answer is A because the text says, "My parents wanted to go shopping, so I took my eight-year-old brother... to a huge history museum." Option B uses the words "old things," but it is wrong logic (Leo loves old things, the parents aren't mentioned as being tired of them). Option C is a wrong reference (the museum was crowded, but the parents were not lost).
15 A - Explanation: The correct answer is A because Finn says he stopped to look at a sword, talked to Leo, and "When I turned around, he wasn't there!" Option B is a partial truth; they did walk into the war room, but Finn didn't realize Leo was missing until after he looked at the sword. Option C is a wrong reference (they looked at gold coins in the first hour).
16 C - Explanation: The correct answer is C because Finn found a "museum guard" (worker) and "explained that my little brother was lost." Option A is wrong logic because Finn specifically says "it was a bad idea to run all over the large building." Option B is a wrong reference because the guard used the radio, not Finn.
17 B - Explanation: The correct answer is B because the text says Leo was in the dinosaur room "smiling and looking very happy." Option A is wrong logic (he was happy, not sad). Option C is the opposite of the truth because the text clearly states, "He didn't even know he was lost!"
18 C - Explanation: The correct answer is C because in the final sentence, Finn makes a decision for the future: "Next time we visit a busy place, I am going to hold his hand the whole time!" Option A is not mentioned in the text. Option B is wrong logic; he found his brother in the dinosaur room, but he doesn't plan to visit it first next time.
Test 3
Questions 14-18
For each question, choose the correct answer.
Taking your best friend on holiday
Fifteen-year-old Gina writes a review of a pet-friendly hotel.
My name is Gina, and I am 15 years old. My family has a beautiful, large dog called Max. We always want to take him on holiday with us, because he is an important part of our family. Finding a good place to stay is often very difficult, but last month we visited a fantastic hotel near the beach where pets are welcome. I want to share my experience with other pet owners.
When we arrived at the hotel, the staff were very friendly and gave Max a special biscuit. But the best part was our bedroom. The hotel gave us a comfortable dog bed for free! Max usually sleeps on my bed at home, but he loved his new bed immediately. They also gave us some big bowls for his food and water.
However, there was one thing I really didn't like about the hotel. In the mornings, we wanted to have breakfast together in the main restaurant. But the hotel manager told us that dogs cannot go inside the dining room. We had to leave Max alone in our bedroom while we ate, and he was very sad. I think a true pet-friendly hotel should let animals go everywhere.
Overall, I had a great time at this hotel. The rooms are lovely, and I think other families with dogs will enjoy staying there too. But I have some important advice if you decide to visit. Don't plan to eat your meals inside. Instead, carry your food outside to the hotel's large terrace. You can sit in the sun with your dog and enjoy your holiday together!
14 Why did Gina's family choose to stay at this hotel?
A They could bring their animal with them.
B They wanted to spend time at the beach.
C They needed a big place for a large family.
15 What did Gina like about the hotel bedroom?
A Her dog could sleep on her bed as usual.
B The staff left some dog biscuits on the bed.
C It had a free place for her dog to sleep.
16 What was the problem with breakfast?
A Max had to eat his food alone in the bedroom.
B Animals were not allowed inside the restaurant.
C The manager was not friendly to Gina's family.
17 What advice does Gina give to visitors?
A Book a nice hotel room that gets a lot of sun.
B Buy your own food and bring it to the hotel.
C Eat your food on the terrace with your dog.
18 What is the best title for this blog?
A A good hotel with one small problem
B How to find the best hotels for dogs
C A perfect beach holiday for my family
Answer Key & Explanations
14 A - Explanation: In the first paragraph, Gina explains that finding a place to stay with a dog is difficult, but they found a hotel "where pets are welcome." This matches option A. Option B is a partial truth; the hotel is near the beach, but that is not the main reason they chose it. Option C is wrong logic; the text says they have a "large dog," not a large family.
15 C - Explanation: In the second paragraph, Gina states that "The hotel gave us a comfortable dog bed for free!", which matches option C. Option A is a wrong logic trap; the text says Max usually sleeps on her bed at home, but here he loved his new dog bed. Option B is a wrong reference; the staff gave Max a biscuit when they arrived, not on the bed.
16 B - Explanation: In the third paragraph, Gina says the manager told them "dogs cannot go inside the dining room," making B the correct answer. Option A is a wrong logic trap; the family left Max alone while they ate breakfast, he didn't eat his food then. Option C is wrong reference; the manager wasn't unfriendly, he just explained the rule (and the staff in paragraph 2 were very friendly).
17 C - Explanation: In the final paragraph, Gina gives the advice to "carry your food outside to the hotel's large terrace" and "sit in the sun with your dog," matching option C. Option A is a wrong reference trap; the text mentions sitting in the sun on the terrace, not booking a sunny room. Option B is wrong logic; she tells people to carry their food outside, not to bring their own food to the hotel.
18 A - Explanation: This is a global question. The blog is a review of a hotel that was mostly great (good rooms, free dog bed) but had one negative issue (dogs not allowed in the restaurant). Therefore, Option A is the best title. Option B is wrong logic because she is reviewing one specific hotel, not teaching people how to find them. Option C is wrong because the holiday was not "perfect" (she had a complaint about the restaurant).
