Test 1
Questions 14-18
For each question, choose the correct answer.
A noisy night in a tent
Sometimes sleeping outside is harder than you think!
Thirteen-year-old Kelly went on a camping trip with her family last weekend. They drove to a lovely forest near a lake. When they arrived, they put up two tents. Her parents took the big one, which meant Kelly had to share a very small tent with her older brother, Tom.
During the day, everything was great. They walked in the forest, went swimming, and cooked their dinner on a fire. When it was dark, Kelly felt really tired. She went into the little tent with Tom. Because the tent was so small, their sleeping beds were very close to each other. Kelly just wanted to get some rest.
However, ten minutes later, a terrible noise started. Tom was sleeping deeply, but he was snoring! He breathed so loudly that it sounded like a wild animal. Kelly tried to wake him up by moving his arm, but he just turned over and continued making the noise. Kelly lay in the dark for a long time. She was exhausted, but she couldn't sleep at all. She felt a bit angry with him.
Then, Kelly had a good idea. She remembered her mobile phone was in her bag. She quickly found it, put her earphones in, and turned on some calm, quiet music. The music helped her relax, and soon, she couldn't hear her brother's noisy snoring. Finally, she closed her eyes and fell asleep.
When Kelly woke up the next morning, Tom was already outside. She got out of the tent and watched a beautiful orange sunrise over the lake. She felt happy again. But Kelly knows what she is going to do for their next camping trip. She is going to ask her mum and dad to buy her a tent of her own!
14 Where did Kelly sleep during the camping trip?
A in a small tent with her brother
B in a big tent with her parents
C in a tent next to the lake on her own
15 How did Kelly feel when it was time to go to bed?
A She was very ready to go to sleep.
B She was angry because her bed was near Tom's.
C She wanted to stay by the fire for longer.
16 Why was Kelly unable to sleep at first?
A There was a wild animal outside the tent.
B Her brother kept waking her up.
C Her brother was making a lot of noise.
17 What did Kelly do with her mobile phone?
A She called her parents for some help.
B She used it to listen to something relaxing.
C She played a loud game so she couldn't hear Tom.
18 What is Kelly planning to do next time she goes camping?
A try to get a tent just for herself
B wake up early to see the sunrise with Tom
C ask her parents to buy her a new sleeping bed
Answer Key & Explanations
14 A - Explanation: The correct answer is A because the text says Kelly "had to share a very small tent with her older brother, Tom." Option B is wrong reference; her parents took the big tent, not Kelly. Option C is a partial truth; they camped near a lake, but Kelly was not on her own.
15 A - Explanation: The correct answer is A because the text states "Kelly felt really tired" and "just wanted to get some rest." Option B is wrong logic; she felt angry later in the night when Tom was snoring, not when it was time to go to bed. Option C is wrong because she didn't want to stay by the fire; she wanted to rest.
16 C - Explanation: The correct answer is C because Tom was snoring and "breathed so loudly." Option A is a partial truth trap; the text says the snoring sounded like a wild animal, not that there was one outside. Option B is wrong logic; Tom didn't wake Kelly up (he was fast asleep), he just stopped her from falling asleep.
17 B - Explanation: The correct answer is B because Kelly put her earphones in and played "calm, quiet music" which "helped her relax". Option A is wrong because she didn't use the phone to call anyone. Option C is wrong logic; she used it to play quiet music, not a loud game.
18 A - Explanation: The correct answer is A because in the final paragraph, Kelly says she is "going to ask her mum and dad to buy her a tent of her own!" Option B is wrong logic; she woke up early and saw the sunrise on this trip, but it is not her plan for the next trip (and Tom was already outside anyway). Option C is a partial truth; she wants her parents to buy her something, but it's a tent, not a new sleeping bed.
Test 2
Questions 14-18
For each question, choose the correct answer.
The best guide in the castle
Fourteen-year-old Leo writes about a special trip with his grandfather.
Hi, I’m Leo, and I am 14 years old. Last summer, I went on a great holiday to Scotland with my grandfather. My grandfather loves history and reads lots of books about the past. He really wanted to visit a famous old castle, so we took a bus there on our second day. I was happy to go with him, but I didn't know much about castles.
When we arrived, we bought our tickets and joined a group of visitors. A tour guide took us around the building. However, the guide was not very interesting. He talked slowly for a long time about when the castle walls and doors were built. There were no exciting stories at all. I felt very tired and almost fell asleep while we were standing in the main hall!
My grandfather saw that I was bored, so he decided to help. He quietly started telling me his own stories about the castle. He explained how brave knights lived there hundreds of years ago. He told me about the heavy swords they used and the fast horses they rode in big battles. He knew so many amazing facts, and his stories were really exciting.
Suddenly, I noticed something funny. The other tourists in our group were not listening to the official guide anymore. They were standing near us and listening to my grandfather's wonderful stories instead! The official guide looked a bit surprised, but everyone clapped when my grandfather finished. I felt incredibly proud of him. Because of this trip, I am going to read more history books so I can tell brilliant stories too!
14 Why did Leo and his grandfather visit the castle?
A Leo wanted to read books about the old building.
B Leo's grandfather is very interested in the past.
C They travelled to Scotland to visit their family.
15 What was the problem with the official tour?
A The guide only talked about uninteresting things.
B The guide spoke too quietly for the group to hear.
C The visitors had to walk around for a long time.
16 What did Leo's grandfather do to help Leo?
A He read a history book out loud to the group.
B He showed Leo some swords from a famous battle.
C He told Leo exciting stories about the knights.
17 What happened at the end of the tour?
A The other tourists decided to listen to Leo's grandfather.
B The tourists clapped when the official guide finished talking.
C The official guide asked Leo's grandfather to tell a story.
18 What is Leo planning to do in the future?
A get a job as a tour guide in Scotland
B write a book about his grandfather's life
C learn more facts about history
Answer Key & Explanations
14 B - Explanation: The correct answer is B because the text says, "My grandfather loves history... He really wanted to visit a famous old castle." Option A is a wrong reference; the grandfather reads history books, not Leo. Option C uses the word "Scotland" from the text but uses wrong logic (they went on holiday there, but the text doesn't say they visited family).
15 A - Explanation: The correct answer is A because the guide only talked "about when the castle walls and doors were built" and there were "no exciting stories at all." Option B is wrong logic; the guide talked "slowly," not quietly. Option C is a partial truth mixed with wrong logic; the tour lasted a long time, but Leo was tired while "standing," not from walking for a long time.
16 C - Explanation: The correct answer is C because the text says the grandfather "started telling me his own stories" and "explained how brave knights lived there." Option A is a wrong reference; he reads history books, but he told the stories himself, he didn't read a book out loud. Option B is wrong logic; he talked about the swords, but he didn't actually show Leo the objects.
17 A - Explanation: The correct answer is A because the text says the other tourists "were standing near us and listening to my grandfather's wonderful stories instead!" Option B is a wrong reference; everyone clapped when the grandfather finished, not the official guide. Option C is wrong logic and is not mentioned in the text.
18 C - Explanation: The correct answer is C because in the final sentence, Leo says, "I am going to read more history books so I can tell brilliant stories too!" Option A is wrong logic; he wants to tell stories, but he doesn't say he wants to work as a tour guide in Scotland. Option B is wrong logic; he plans to read books, not write one about his grandfather.
Test 3
Questions 14-18
For each question, choose the correct answer.
A summer camp in the mountains
Thirteen-year-old Mia writes a review of an international youth camp.
My name is Mia and I am 13 years old. I have just returned from a fantastic trip. I spent two weeks at an international youth summer camp, which was high up in the mountains. I had a really interesting time there away from my family, so I decided to write this review to tell other teenagers about my experience.
The best thing about the camp was the people. There were teenagers from many different countries staying there. At first, I felt a little worried because I didn't know anyone in my group. But we did lots of team sports, long walks, and fun activities every day. Because of this, it was very easy to talk and share ideas. Now, I have some great new friends from Spain and Japan, and we chat online every day.
However, not everything about the trip was perfect. We ate all our daily meals together in a large cafeteria. The kitchen staff were very friendly and polite, but the food they cooked was extremely boring. Every day, we had plain pasta, soup, or simple sandwiches with no taste. I really missed my parents' delicious cooking. I think a good camp needs to give young people better, healthier meals.
Overall, I think this summer camp is a wonderful place to visit. You will definitely enjoy the beautiful nature and all the brilliant games they organise. I would love to go back again next summer. But I have an important piece of advice if you decide to go. You should definitely pack lots of your favourite snacks in your bag before you leave home!
14 Why has Mia written this review?
A to share her camp experience with other teenagers
B to describe the beautiful nature in the mountains
C to thank the kitchen staff for her fantastic trip
15 How did Mia feel on her first day at the camp?
A tired after doing a lot of long walks
B happy to meet teenagers from Japan
C worried because she didn't know the other people
16 What did Mia think of the cafeteria?
A The people working there were unfriendly.
B The food was not very exciting to eat.
C The room was too small for everyone.
17 What is Mia's advice for people going to the camp?
A They should pack some things to eat.
B They should bring a very big bag with them.
C They should spend lots of time playing games.
18 What is the best title for this review?
A The best way to make international friends
B A fun holiday, but remember to bring snacks
C How to cook your own healthy meals
Answer Key & Explanations
14 A - Explanation: In the first paragraph, Mia states "I decided to write this review to tell other teenagers about my experience", which perfectly matches option A. Option B is a partial truth trap; she mentions the beautiful nature in the final paragraph, but it is not her main reason for writing. Option C is wrong logic; she says the kitchen staff were friendly, but she didn't write the review to thank them (and she didn't like their food).
15 C - Explanation: In the second paragraph, Mia says, "At first, I felt a little worried because I didn't know anyone in my group." This matches option C. Option A is a chronological trap; they went on long walks during the camp, but she doesn't say she was tired on the first day. Option B is also a chronological trap; she was happy to have Japanese friends by the end of the trip, not on the first day when she knew no one.
16 B - Explanation: In the third paragraph, Mia explains that "the food they cooked was extremely boring" and had "no taste". This matches option B. Option A is wrong reference; Mia actually says the kitchen staff were "very friendly and polite". Option C is wrong logic; she describes it as a "large cafeteria", not a small one.
17 A - Explanation: In the final paragraph, Mia gives an important piece of advice: "You should definitely pack lots of your favourite snacks". Snacks are things to eat, making option A correct. Option B is a wrong reference trap; she mentions packing snacks in your bag, but her advice is about the food, not the size of the bag. Option C is a partial truth; she says visitors will enjoy the games, but this is a fact, not her special advice.
18 B - Explanation: This is a global question. The review focuses on how much fun the camp was (making friends, doing activities) but includes a major complaint about the boring food, ending with a strong recommendation to pack snacks. Option B covers the whole message. Option A is a partial truth; the text mentions making friends, but ignores the second half of the review. Option C is a wrong logic trap; she talks about the cafeteria food, but does not teach the reader how to cook.
