For each question, choose the correct answer.
Real holiday food
15-year-old Gina writes about what tourists should eat when they travel.
Hi, I'm Gina and I'm 15. When my family and I go on holiday, we love trying new things. But I always see tourists doing something I don't understand. They go to the same fast-food restaurants that they have at home. They travel to beautiful new countries, but they just eat the same burgers and chips every day. I think people should stop doing this because there is so much else to eat.
For me, food is a big part of the travel adventure. When you eat what the local people eat, you learn about their country. Sometimes the meals look a bit strange or they are cooked in a different way. But that is the fun part! Last year in Asia, I tried some unusual fish dishes, and they tasted amazing. You will never find these exciting meals in a normal fast-food shop.
Of course, eating local food is not always perfect. Sometimes it can actually cause problems. In some countries, they use a lot of very hot spices in their daily cooking. If your body isn't used to them, you might get a really bad stomach ache. I had one once on a trip, and I had to stay in my hotel room all day. It completely ruined my plans for the afternoon.
However, I still believe everyone should try one new local meal every day on their holiday. You might find a new favourite dish! Just remember to be careful. It is always a good idea to keep some basic medicine in your bag before you go out. Then, you can enjoy your food adventure safely!
14 What does Gina say about some tourists in the first paragraph?
A They choose to eat meals that they already know.
B They like to try new things in beautiful countries.
C They eat burgers and chips with the local people.
15 Why does Gina think it is good to eat local food?
A It helps you to understand more about the country.
B The meals are usually cooked in a very normal way.
C It is easy to find in most fast-food shops.
16 What problem did Gina have on holiday once?
A She had to stay inside because it was too hot outdoors.
B She felt ill because of something in her meal.
C She was angry because her hotel ruined her plans.
17 What is Gina's advice for holidaymakers?
A Eat a new local dish for every meal of the day.
B Take something with you to help if you feel sick.
C Buy a new bag to carry your medicine in.
18 What would be the best title for Gina's blog?
A How to cook amazing food from different countries
B Why you should say no to fast food on holiday
C The best fast-food restaurants to visit in Asia
Answer Key & Explanations
14 A - Explanation: In the first paragraph, Gina says that tourists "go to the same fast-food restaurants that they have at home" and "just eat the same burgers and chips", matching A. Option B is a wrong reference trap; Gina and her family like to try new things, not the tourists she is complaining about. Option C is a wrong logic trap; the tourists eat burgers, but the text doesn't say they eat them with the local people.
15 A - Explanation: In the second paragraph, Gina states, "When you eat what the local people eat, you learn about their country," matching A. Option B is a wrong logic trap; she actually says the meals are "cooked in a different way," not a normal way. Option C is a wrong logic trap; the text says you will "never find these exciting meals in a normal fast-food shop."
16 B - Explanation: In the third paragraph, Gina explains that she got a "bad stomach ache" because her body wasn't used to the "hot spices" in the cooking, matching B. Option A is a wrong logic trap; the word "hot" is used to describe the spices in the food, not the weather outside. Option C is a wrong logic trap; her stomach ache ruined her plans, not the hotel itself.
17 B - Explanation: In the final paragraph, Gina advises readers to "keep some basic medicine in your bag before you go out," which matches B. Option A is a partial truth trap; she says to try "one" new local meal a day, not for every meal. Option C is a wrong logic trap; she tells people to put medicine in their bag, not to buy a new bag.
18 B - Explanation: This is a global question. The entire text is an opinion piece where Gina argues that tourists should stop eating familiar fast food and try local dishes instead, making B the best title. Option A is wrong because she is talking about eating food, not teaching people how to cook it. Option C is wrong because her message is exactly the opposite; she wants tourists to avoid fast-food restaurants.
Test 2
Questions 14-18
For each question, choose the correct answer.
My first time eating sushi
Twelve-year-old Harry writes about a special meal he had in Japan.
Hi, I’m Harry, and I’m 12 years old. Last month, I went on an amazing holiday to Japan with my family. On our first evening in Tokyo, we went out for dinner. We visited a famous sushi restaurant. It wasn't a normal restaurant because the food travelled around the room on a moving belt! I was very excited to be there.
However, when we sat down, I suddenly felt a bit worried. Lots of small plates moved past our table, but I didn't know what to choose. I knew that people in Japan eat a lot of raw fish - fish that is not cooked. I usually only eat hot meals at home, so I was really afraid to put raw fish in my mouth.
My parents quickly took some plates from the moving belt and started eating. They said their food was fantastic. I watched the plates for a long time, but I didn't take anything. In the end, my dad saw I was hungry. He called the waiter over and asked him to bring something that didn't have any fish or meat inside it.
A few minutes later, the waiter returned with two special plates just for me. One had cucumber sushi and the other had sweet egg sushi. I took a piece and put it in my mouth. It tasted absolutely delicious! I finished everything on my plates. I felt incredibly proud that I tried something new in a different country. I am definitely going to look for a Japanese restaurant in my hometown so I can eat egg sushi again!
14 What was unusual about the restaurant in Tokyo?
A The meals moved past the tables.
B It was a famous place for families to cook.
C It only opened on the first evening of the trip.
15 Why was Harry worried when he sat down?
A He couldn't find his favourite hot meal on the menu.
B He didn't want to eat uncooked fish.
C The small plates moved around too quickly.
16 What did Harry's dad do to help him?
A He showed Harry how to take plates from the belt.
B He asked a worker to bring Harry a different meal.
C He told the waiter to try some of the fantastic food.
17 What did Harry do when he got his special plates?
A He ate all of the food on them.
B He only tasted the sweet egg sushi.
C He asked his parents to try a piece.
18 What is Harry planning to do in the future?
A learn how to make his own sushi at home
B travel to Japan again to try eating raw fish
C find a place to eat egg sushi near his home
Answer Key & Explanations
14 A - Explanation: The correct answer is A because the text says it wasn't a normal restaurant "because the food travelled around the room on a moving belt!" Option B is wrong logic; he went with his family, but they didn't cook the food themselves. Option C is a wrong reference; his family went there on their first evening, but the restaurant doesn't only open then.
15 B - Explanation: The correct answer is B because Harry says he was "really afraid to put raw fish in my mouth" and explains that raw means "not cooked." Option A is a partial truth mixed with wrong logic; he says he usually eats hot meals, but he wasn't looking for one on a menu. Option C is wrong logic; the plates moved past him, but he never says they moved too quickly.
16 B - Explanation: The correct answer is B because the text says his dad "called the waiter over and asked him to bring something that didn't have any fish or meat inside it." Option A is wrong logic; his parents took plates, but his dad didn't teach Harry how to do it. Option C is a wrong reference; his dad talked to the waiter, but he didn't tell him to eat the food.
17 A - Explanation: The correct answer is A because Harry states, "I finished everything on my plates." Option B is a partial truth mixed with wrong logic; he had a plate of sweet egg sushi, but he didn't only taste that (he had cucumber too, and finished both). Option C is wrong logic and is not mentioned in the text.
18 C - Explanation: The correct answer is C because in the final sentence, Harry says, "I am definitely going to look for a Japanese restaurant in my hometown so I can eat egg sushi again!" Option A is wrong logic; he wants to eat it in a restaurant, not make it himself. Option B is a partial truth; he was in Japan, but he doesn't plan to go back just to eat raw fish (he was afraid of it).
Test 3
Questions 14-18
For each question, choose the correct answer.
Dancing in Greece
Sometimes the best way to enjoy a holiday is to try something new!
Fourteen-year-old Iris loves travelling. Last summer, she went on holiday to Greece with her parents. They didn't stay in a busy city. Instead, they visited a quiet village by the sea. One evening, there was a traditional festival in the village square. Iris was excited because she wanted to see how the local people celebrated.
When they arrived, there were beautiful lights everywhere. People cooked amazing food and played loud, happy music. Everyone sat at long tables, laughing and eating together. Iris and her family sat next to a friendly Greek family. They didn't speak much English, but they smiled and gave Iris some delicious sweet cakes to try.
Suddenly, the music became faster. A group of teenagers stood up and started to do a traditional dance in a big circle. An older woman walked over to Iris, took her hand, and asked her to join in. Iris felt very nervous. She wanted to join them, but she didn't know the right steps. The dance looked very fast and difficult to learn.
Iris stood in the circle next to a girl of her own age. She decided to carefully watch the girl's feet and copy her movements. At first, it was hard. Iris accidentally stepped on the girl's toes a few times! But the girl just laughed and helped Iris to find the rhythm.
By the end of the evening, Iris was very tired but completely happy. It was the most unforgettable night of her holiday. Because she loved the experience so much, Iris is planning to start a traditional dance class at her school next month!

A A friendly Greek family spoke to them in English.
B Iris cooked an amazing meal for the other people.
C Some local people shared their food with Iris.
16 How did Iris feel when the woman asked her to dance?
A bored because the traditional music was too slow
B worried because she didn't know what to do
C angry because a group of teenagers stood up
17 How did Iris manage to do the dance?
A She looked at another girl and did the same as her.
B She asked a girl of her own age to teach her the steps.
C She followed the dance movements of an older woman.
18 What is Iris going to do next month?
A begin learning a new type of dance
B travel back to the same Greek village
C organise a special festival at her school
Answer Key & Explanations
14 A - Explanation: The correct answer is A because the text says she "wanted to see how the local people celebrated." Option B is a partial truth trap; the text mentions a busy city, but explicitly says they "didn't stay" in one. Option C is wrong logic; she is already on her holiday by the sea, not planning one.
15 C - Explanation: The correct answer is C because the friendly Greek family "gave Iris some delicious sweet cakes to try." Option A is a partial truth trap; they sat with a Greek family, but the text says they "didn't speak much English." Option B is wrong reference; the local people cooked the food, not Iris.
16 B - Explanation: The correct answer is B because Iris "felt very nervous" (worried) and "didn't know the right steps." Option A is a partial truth trap; the text mentions the music, but says it became "faster," not slow. Option C is wrong logic; she wasn't angry, she actually "wanted to join them."
17 A - Explanation: The correct answer is A because Iris decided to "carefully watch the girl's feet and copy her movements." Option B is a partial truth trap; she stood next to a girl of her own age, but she didn't ask her to teach her; she just watched and copied. Option C is wrong reference; an older woman asked her to dance, but Iris copied the movements of the young girl next to her.
18 A - Explanation: The correct answer is A because the final paragraph states Iris is planning to "start a traditional dance class" at her school. Option B is wrong logic; she had an unforgettable holiday, but there is no mention of travelling back to the village next month. Option C is a partial truth trap; she is doing something at her school, but it is a dance class, not a festival.
