Questions 14-18

For each question, choose the correct answer.

A special phone call from Paris

Technology is amazing, but the weather can sometimes cause problems!

Fourteen-year-old Mark was very excited. Last week, he went on a family holiday to Paris. Before the trip, he made a special plan with his best friend, David, who was back home in England. Mark promised to make a video call to David from the very top of the famous Eiffel Tower. He wanted his friend to see the beautiful city.

On Tuesday morning, Mark and his family bought their tickets and went up the tall metal tower. When they finally arrived at the top, Mark was amazed by how small everything looked down below. He quickly took his mobile phone out of his pocket, connected to the internet, and started the video call. David answered immediately and smiled at the camera.

However, there was a big problem. Because they were so high up in the sky, the wind was blowing very fast. It was incredibly loud. Mark shouted into his phone, "Can you hear me, David?" But David just looked confused and pointed at his ears. He couldn't hear a single word Mark said because of the noisy wind.

Mark didn't want to end the call, so he thought of a clever idea. He decided to stop speaking. Instead, he switched the camera on his phone so David could look at the amazing streets and buildings of Paris. Then, Mark started typing text messages to him.

David typed back, and they chatted happily for ten minutes while looking at the city. Mark was very pleased that they could still share this special moment. For his next trip, Mark is going to buy a better microphone for his phone so he can talk in windy places!

14   Why did Mark want to call David?

A He wanted to show David the city of Paris.

B He needed to make a plan for a holiday in England.

C His family asked him to speak to his best friend.

15   What happened when Mark reached the top of the tower?

A He used his phone to buy tickets online.

B His friend answered the phone straight away.

C He dropped his mobile phone from the tall tower.

16   Why couldn't David understand Mark?

A Mark was too high up to get an internet connection.

B David was talking too loudly on the phone.

C The weather at the top made too much noise.

17   What did Mark do to fix the problem?

A He ended the video call to take photos of the streets.

B He sent written messages instead of talking.

C He walked down to a quieter building to chat.

18   What is Mark planning to do for his next holiday?

A get some new equipment for his mobile phone

B travel to a different windy city with David

C spend more time texting his friends

Answer Key & Explanations

14 A - Explanation: The correct answer is A because the text says Mark "wanted his friend to see the beautiful city" of Paris. Option B is a partial truth; David is in England, but Mark didn't call to plan an English holiday. Option C is wrong logic; Mark made the plan himself, not his family.

15 B - Explanation: The correct answer is B because the text states that when Mark started the video call, "David answered immediately". Option A is wrong logic; Mark and his family bought tickets before going up the tower, not at the top. Option C is wrong because Mark only took his phone out of his pocket; he didn't drop it.

16 C - Explanation: The correct answer is C because "the wind was blowing very fast" and it was "incredibly loud," meaning the weather caused the noise. Option A is a partial truth; they were very high up, but Mark did have an internet connection. Option B is wrong reference; it was Mark who was shouting, while David couldn't hear him.

17 B - Explanation: The correct answer is B because Mark decided to stop speaking and "started typing text messages to him". Option A is a partial truth; Mark wanted to show the streets, but he explicitly "didn't want to end the call". Option C is wrong logic; Mark showed David the buildings below, but he didn't walk down to one.

18 A - Explanation: The correct answer is A because the final paragraph states Mark "is going to buy a better microphone for his phone". Option B is wrong logic; he wants to be prepared for windy places, but the text doesn't say he is traveling with David. Option C is wrong because he is buying a microphone specifically "so he can talk," not just text.

    Test 2

    Questions 14-18

For each question, choose the correct answer.

    City treasure hunt

Thirteen-year-old Nora writes about a game she played while on holiday.

Hi, I'm Nora, and I'm 13 years old. Last month, I went on holiday to Paris with my family. While we were there, I wanted to try a fun game called 'geocaching'. It's a kind of treasure hunt. You use a GPS map app on your mobile phone to find real hidden boxes. On our first day, we went to a really large, beautiful park in the middle of the city to look for one.

When we arrived at the park, I opened the app on my phone. It showed a red spot on the map to tell me where the treasure was hiding. We walked past a small lake and a café until we reached a quiet garden. Suddenly, my phone made a loud noise. This meant we were finally in the right place to start looking.

The app information said the box was somewhere near a big wooden bench. I quickly looked under the seat, but there was only some old paper and a few dry leaves. I asked my parents to help me look. We searched all around the bench very carefully for twenty minutes, but we couldn't find anything at all. I started to think the box wasn't there.

Then, I noticed a very old tree just behind the bench. It had a dark hole near the bottom. I put my hand inside the hole, and I touched something hard. It was a small plastic box! I opened it and found a little paper notebook inside. I felt really proud when I wrote my name and the date in the book. I'm definitely going to look for more hidden boxes when we go away again!

14   What did Nora do on her first day in Paris?

A She bought a special map app for her phone.

B She went to a park to look for a hidden box.

C She hid some treasure in the middle of the city.

15   How did Nora know she was in the correct place to search?

A Her phone made a sudden sound.

B She saw a red spot on a café.

C She found a quiet garden.

16   When Nora looked near the wooden bench, she

A asked her parents to pick up some old paper.

B searched for the box by herself for twenty minutes.

C couldn't find the box even with her parents' help.

17   Where was the plastic box hiding?

A inside part of a tree

           B under a wooden seat

           C behind a little notebook

18   What is Nora planning to do in the future?

A return to the same park in Paris one day

B hide her own notebook for other people to find

C play the treasure hunt game again on her next trip

    Answer Key & Explanations

14 B - Explanation: The correct answer is B because the text says, "On our first day, we went to a really large... park... to look for one [a hidden box]." Option A is wrong logic; she used an app, but the text doesn't say she bought it on the first day. Option C is wrong logic; she was looking for treasure, not hiding it.

15 A - Explanation: The correct answer is A because Nora says her phone "made a loud noise" and this meant they "were finally in the right place to start looking." Option B is a wrong reference; the red spot was on her map, not on the café. Option C is a partial truth; she did find a quiet garden, but it was the noise from her phone that told her it was the exact right place.

16 C - Explanation: The correct answer is C because the text says, "We searched... for twenty minutes, but we couldn't find anything at all," which includes her parents' help. Option A is wrong logic; she saw old paper under the seat, but she didn't ask her parents to pick it up. Option B is a partial truth; they searched for twenty minutes, but she did it with her parents, not by herself.

17 A - Explanation: The correct answer is A because Nora found the box when she put her hand "inside the hole" of "a very old tree." Option B is a partial truth; she looked under the wooden seat, but the box wasn't there. Option C is a wrong reference; the notebook was inside the box, the box wasn't behind it.

18 C - Explanation: The correct answer is C because in the final sentence Nora says, "I'm definitely going to look for more hidden boxes when we go away again!" Option A is wrong logic; she wants to play the game on her next trip, but she doesn't mention returning to the same park in Paris. Option B is wrong logic; she wrote in the notebook she found, but she doesn't plan to hide her own notebook.

      Test 3

      Questions 14-18

For each question, choose the correct answer.

Look at the world, not your screen!

Fifteen-year-old Oscar writes a blog about using phones on holiday.

My name is Oscar and I am 15 years old. I love going on holiday with my family and visiting different countries. However, on our last trip, I noticed something sad about people my age. I think that many teenagers waste their holidays because they are always taking photos. They spend more time holding their phones than exploring the new places they visit.

Of course, I agree that taking a few photos is a very good idea. It is really nice to have pictures of your family and friends to look at when you go back home after a long trip. Pictures can easily help us to remember the fun times we had together.

But there is a big problem when you look at everything through a small screen all day. When you do this, you miss the real holiday. You don't actually see how beautiful a beach or an old city is. Many young people only care about getting a perfect photo to put on the internet for their friends to see. Because of this, they forget to relax and just enjoy the real world around them.

To change this, I now have a special rule for myself when I travel. I call it the 'ten photos a day' rule. I only allow myself to take ten pictures every day, and no more. This means I still have some great photos to keep. But more importantly, I have a lot more free time to put my phone in my pocket, look around, and truly enjoy my amazing trip! I think everyone should try doing this on their next holiday.

14   What does Oscar think about teenagers on holiday?

A They spend too much time using their phones.

B They don't want to travel to new places.

C They take bad photos of their families.

15   Why does Oscar say it is good to take some photos?

A You can show them to your friends on the internet.

B They help you remember your holiday later.

C You can give them to your family as a present.

16   According to Oscar, what happens when you look at a screen too much?

A You forget where the beautiful places are.

B You don't really see the places you visit.

C You find it difficult to take the perfect picture.

17   How does Oscar's new rule help him?

A He doesn't need to take his phone on trips anymore.

B He can take better pictures of his holidays.

C He can spend more time enjoying his trip.

18   What is the best title for this article?

A How to take perfect holiday photos

B Put your phone away and enjoy the trip

C The best places to visit on your next holiday

      Answer Key & Explanations

14 A - Explanation: In the first paragraph, Oscar says teenagers "spend more time holding their phones than exploring". This means they spend too much time using them (Option A). Option B is wrong logic; the text says they visit new places, but they just don't look at them. Option C is a wrong logic trap; he says they take too many photos, not that the photos are bad.

15 B - Explanation: In the second paragraph, Oscar says "Pictures can easily help us to remember the fun times we had together", which matches Option B. Option A is a wrong reference trap; the text mentions putting photos on the internet in the third paragraph as a bad thing, not a good thing. Option C is a partial truth trap; it uses the word "family" from the text, but he doesn't say you should give the photos as presents.

16 B - Explanation: In the third paragraph, Oscar explains that if you look through a screen, "You don't actually see how beautiful a beach or an old city is", matching Option B. Option A uses the word "beautiful" from the text but changes the meaning (you don't forget where they are, you just don't see them). Option C is wrong logic; teenagers care about getting the perfect picture, but Oscar doesn't say it is difficult to do.

17 C - Explanation: In the final paragraph, Oscar says because of his rule, "I have a lot more free time to... truly enjoy my amazing trip!" This matches Option C. Option A is a partial truth trap; he puts his phone in his pocket, but he still takes it on the trip to take ten photos. Option B is wrong logic; his rule helps him take fewer photos, not necessarily better ones.

18 B - Explanation: This is a global question. The main idea of the whole text is that people should stop looking at their phones so much and actually look at the world around them while on holiday. This makes Option B the best title. Option A is the opposite of the writer's message. Option C is a partial truth trap; the text talks about holidays, but it does not tell the reader where the best places to visit are.
