Questions 14-18

For each question, choose the correct answer.

A difficult walk in the forest

Sometimes you need to be very careful when you pack your bag!

Fourteen-year-old Olivia loves being outdoors and exploring nature. Last weekend, she went on a special camping trip with her local scout group. They travelled to a large forest in the mountains to go hiking. On Saturday morning, the group started to walk up a very high, steep hill. Everyone in the group felt very excited, so they were walking very fast to reach the top.

However, after twenty minutes, Olivia started to feel quite unwell. She began to cough a lot, and it was suddenly very difficult for her to breathe. Olivia has a common health problem called asthma. This means she sometimes needs to use a small plastic inhaler, which is a special medicine, to help her breathe normally when she does sports or exercises.

Olivia stopped walking and quickly looked inside her small backpack. But her medicine wasn't there! She suddenly remembered that she left it inside her sleeping bag back at the scout camp. She felt extremely worried because they were very far away from the campsite. She quickly called her group leader, David, and explained the problem to him.

David was very kind and told Olivia not to worry. He opened his large medical bag and looked inside. Luckily, he always carried some spare asthma medicine for emergencies. He gave it to Olivia, and after just a few minutes, she could breathe easily again.

For the rest of the day, David told the group to walk much slower. Olivia enjoyed the beautiful forest and had a great time with her friends. Because of this scary experience, Olivia is planning to write a packing checklist for her bag before her next scout trip!

14   Why was the group walking so quickly on Saturday morning?

A They felt excited about getting to the top of the hill.

B They wanted to arrive at the forest campsite early.

C They needed to finish their long hike before it rained.

15   What happened to Olivia during the walk?

A She hurt herself while she was playing sports.

B She found it very hard to get enough air.

C She stopped to take some medicine for a bad cough.

16   Why was Olivia extremely worried?

A She couldn't find her group leader to ask for help.

B She lost her small backpack on the way to the camp.

C She realised her medicine was left behind at the campsite.

17   How did David solve the problem?

A He provided some extra medicine from his own bag.

B He told her to sit down and rest for a few minutes.

C He looked inside her backpack to find her inhaler.

18   What is Olivia planning to do before her next trip?

A buy a warm new sleeping bag for the camp

B make a list of things to put in her backpack

C ask her scout group to walk much slower

Answer Key & Explanations

14 A - Explanation: The correct answer is A because the text says "Everyone in the group felt very excited, so they were walking very fast to reach the top" (getting to the top of the hill). Option B is wrong logic; they were walking away from the campsite to hike, not arriving at it. Option C is not in the text; the weather or rain is never mentioned.

15 B - Explanation: The correct answer is B because the text says "it was suddenly very difficult for her to breathe" (hard to get enough air). Option A is a partial truth trap; the text mentions she uses her medicine when she does "sports", but she didn't hurt herself playing sports on this trip. Option C is wrong logic; she was coughing, but she couldn't take her medicine because she didn't have it.

16 C - Explanation: The correct answer is C because Olivia remembered she "left it inside her sleeping bag back at the scout camp" (left behind at the campsite). Option A is wrong logic; she "quickly called her group leader", so she had no problem finding him. Option B is a partial truth trap; she looked inside her backpack, but she didn't lose the bag itself.

17 A - Explanation: The correct answer is A because David opened his medical bag and "gave it to Olivia" because he "carried some spare asthma medicine" (extra medicine). Option B is a wrong logic trap; the text says that after a few minutes she could breathe easily, not that David told her to sit and rest. Option C is a wrong reference trap; Olivia looked in her own backpack, but David looked inside his large medical bag.

18 B - Explanation: The correct answer is B because in the final paragraph, Olivia plans to "write a packing checklist for her bag" (make a list of things to put in her backpack). Option A is a partial truth trap; a sleeping bag is mentioned in paragraph 3, but she is not planning to buy a new one. Option C is a wrong reference trap; David told the group to walk slower on this trip, but Olivia isn't planning to ask them to do this next time.

    Test 2

    Questions 14-18

For each question, choose the correct answer.

    No phones and no pizza!

Fifteen-year-old Paul writes a blog about his week at a teen health camp.

My name is Paul and I am 15 years old. Last month, I spent a week at a special health camp for teenagers in the countryside. I am writing this blog to tell other people about my experience. The camp was very different from a normal summer holiday. The leaders wanted us to get fit and healthy, so we only ate fresh vegetables and fruit for every single meal. There was absolutely no pizza, burgers, or ice cream anywhere!

There was another important rule at the camp. We couldn't use our mobile phones or computers for a whole week. At first, I felt quite worried about this. But actually, taking a long break from screens was really good for my brain. I felt much calmer and I slept perfectly every night. However, the food was quite difficult for me. By Wednesday, I was very hungry for sweet things. In fact, I wanted them so much that I started dreaming about eating chocolate!

Overall, I think the health camp is a great place to visit. It is hard work, but it really helps you to learn good habits and look after your body. I definitely recommend it. But I have one important piece of advice for future visitors. Before you go, you should learn how to make sweet energy snacks using nuts. You can easily make them in the camp kitchen, and they will really help you when you just want to eat chocolate!

14   What was the food like at the health camp?

A The teenagers had to cook all their own meals.

B The leaders cooked lots of pizzas and burgers.

C The teenagers only ate fresh fruit and vegetables.

15   How did Paul feel about the rule about mobile phones?

A He liked it because it helped him to feel relaxed.

B He thought it was a bad idea because he couldn't sleep.

C He was angry because he wanted to use his computer.

16   What happened to Paul on Wednesday?

A He felt sick after eating lots of sweet things.

B He started to feel very hungry for chocolate.

C He had a bad dream about working hard at the camp.

17   What does Paul advise people to do before they visit the camp?

A bring lots of chocolate in their travel bags

B buy some healthy food to take to the camp

C learn how to make some sweet food with nuts

18   What is the best title for this blog?

A How to grow vegetables on your summer holiday

B A healthy camp, but learn to make your own snacks

C The best ways to use your phone at a summer camp

    Answer Key & Explanations

14 C - Explanation: In the first paragraph, Paul explains that "we only ate fresh vegetables and fruit for every single meal." This makes option C correct. Option A is a wrong logic trap; the text talks about what they ate, but never says they had to cook the meals themselves. Option B is the opposite of the text (wrong logic); Paul says there was absolutely no pizza or burgers.

15 A - Explanation: In the second paragraph, Paul says that not using screens was good for his brain and "I felt much calmer". Feeling calmer means feeling relaxed, which matches option A. Option B is a wrong logic trap; Paul felt worried at first, but the rule helped him sleep perfectly, it didn't stop him from sleeping. Option C is a wrong logic trap; computers were banned, but he wasn't angry about it, he found it helpful.

16 B - Explanation: In the second paragraph, Paul states that by Wednesday, "I was very hungry for sweet things... I started dreaming about eating chocolate!" This matches option B. Option A is a wrong logic trap; he wanted sweet things, but he didn't eat them and he didn't feel sick. Option C is a partial truth trap; he had a dream, but it was about eating chocolate, not about working hard.

17 C - Explanation: In the final paragraph, Paul's important piece of advice is: "Before you go, you should learn how to make sweet energy snacks using nuts." This perfectly matches option C. Option A is a wrong logic trap; he wants chocolate, but he doesn't tell people to bring it. Option B is a partial truth trap; he advises readers to make healthy snacks at the camp, not to buy them before they travel.

18 B - Explanation: This is a global question. The blog reviews a health camp experience that was good for Paul's body and brain, but he warns readers about missing sweet food and advises them to learn to make nut snacks. Option B perfectly summarises the whole text. Option A is a wrong logic trap; they ate vegetables, but he doesn't teach readers how to grow them. Option C is a wrong logic trap; phones were not allowed at the camp.

      Test 3

      Questions 14-18

For each question, choose the correct answer.

A painful lesson in the sun

Fourteen-year-old Queenie writes about a summer sports competition.

Hi, I’m Queenie, and I am 14 years old. I love playing sports, especially tennis. Last July, my local club had a big summer tennis tournament. I really wanted to win, so I practised a lot. The competition was outside on the grass courts. The weather that day was beautiful, but the summer sun was incredibly hot.

I arrived early and met my friends. We played tennis all morning and afternoon. I had a fantastic time running around and hitting the ball. However, I made a really silly mistake. I brought a bottle of sunscreen in my sports bag, but I completely forgot to put it on my skin. I was just too excited to start playing my matches!

When the tournament finally finished, I walked back to my house. I looked in the bathroom mirror and saw a big problem. My arms and face were bright red! They felt extremely hot and painful. That night, I couldn't sleep very well because my skin hurt every time I moved in bed.

For the rest of the week, the weather was still very warm. But I had to wear a shirt with long sleeves every day to protect my red arms from the sun when I went outside. I felt quite uncomfortable wearing winter clothes in the summer!

However, I definitely learned a very important lesson about skin health. You must always be careful when you are outside for a long time. Next summer, I am going to put sunscreen all over my body before I even leave the house!

14   What does Queenie say about the tennis tournament in July?

A She won the competition after practising a lot.

B It happened outside on a very warm day.

C She travelled to another town to play in it.

15   Why didn't Queenie use her sunscreen?

A She left the bottle at home by mistake.

B She lost her sports bag in the morning.

C She couldn't wait to begin her tennis matches.

16   What problem did Queenie have after the competition?

A Her arms were too painful for her to sleep well.

B She broke the mirror in her bathroom.

C She felt too hot to walk back to her house.

17   What did Queenie have to do for the rest of the week?

A buy some new winter clothes to wear for tennis

B wear long clothes to keep the sun off her skin

C stay inside the house because of the hot weather

18   What is Queenie planning to do next summer?

A use sunscreen before she goes out

B spend less time outside in the sun

C take a lot of sunscreen in her bag

      Answer Key & Explanations

14 B - Explanation: The correct answer is B because the text says the competition was "outside" and the summer sun was "incredibly hot" (a very warm day). Option A is a partial truth; she wanted to win and practised a lot, but she doesn't say that she won. Option C is wrong logic; it was her "local club", so she didn't travel to another town.

15 C - Explanation: The correct answer is C because Queenie says she forgot to put the sunscreen on because "I was just too excited to start playing my matches!" Option A is a wrong reference; she left the sunscreen in her sports bag, not at home. Option B uses the words "sports bag", but it is wrong logic because she didn't lose the bag.

16 A - Explanation: The correct answer is A because Queenie says her arms were painful and she "couldn't sleep very well because my skin hurt". Option B uses the word "mirror" from the text, but is wrong logic because she only looked in it; she didn't break it. Option C is a partial truth mixed with wrong logic; she felt hot and she walked back to her house, but she wasn't too hot to do the walk.

17 B - Explanation: The correct answer is B because the text says she "had to wear a shirt with long sleeves every day to protect my red arms from the sun". Option A is a partial truth; she says she felt like she was wearing winter clothes, but she didn't buy new ones to play tennis in. Option C is wrong logic; she wore the clothes to protect her skin when she "went outside", so she didn't stay inside the house.

18 A - Explanation: The correct answer is A because in the final paragraph, Queenie says, "I am going to put sunscreen all over my body before I even leave the house!" Option B is wrong logic; she learned you must be careful outside, but she doesn't plan to spend less time in the sun. Option C is wrong logic; she put sunscreen in her bag this time and forgot to use it, so her new plan is to put it on before leaving.
