Test 1
Questions 14-18
For each question, choose the correct answer.
A problem by the lake
14-year-old Wendy writes about a nature walk in the evening.
My name is Wendy, and I am 14 years old. I love spending time outside in nature. Last week, the weather in my town was extremely hot during the day. So, in the evening, I decided to go for a peaceful walk next to the large lake near my house. I really wanted to relax and enjoy the cool wind.
Before I left my house, I made a big mistake. Usually, I always put a special spray on my arms and legs to keep flying insects away. But this time, I was in a hurry to see the sunset, so I completely forgot about it. I just put on my comfortable walking shoes and quickly walked out of the door.
At first, the walk was lovely. The water looked beautiful, and the air was nice and cool. But suddenly, I felt something on my leg. A large mosquito was sitting on my ankle, just above my shoe! I quickly pushed it away, but it was too late. The insect gave me a huge bite. After a few minutes, my skin became very red and started to feel very itchy. I was quite uncomfortable.
Because of my leg, I decided to stop my walk and return home immediately. When I arrived, my mother gave me a tube of special cooling cream. I carefully put the white cream on the mosquito bite, and it felt so much better. The terrible itchy feeling stopped straight away, and I felt very relaxed again. Tomorrow evening, I am going to walk by the lake again, but I will definitely remember to use my insect spray!
14 Why did Wendy go for a walk in the evening?
A to enjoy the cool weather near the water
B to escape the hot weather inside her house
C to go for a short swim in the large lake
15 What mistake did Wendy make before leaving home?
A She put the wrong walking shoes on her feet.
B She forgot to put on her insect spray.
C She left her special spray next to the lake.
16 What happened while Wendy was walking?
A She hurt her ankle because she walked too fast.
B She stepped on a large insect with her shoe.
C A mosquito bit her on the leg.
17 How did Wendy solve her problem?
A She put a cold white cloth on her leg.
B She used some cream to stop the bad feeling.
C She asked her mother to clean the mosquito bite.
18 What is Wendy planning to do tomorrow evening?
A go back to the same place for another walk
B buy some new insect spray for her evening walks
C walk around the large lake with her mother
Answer Key & Explanations
14 A - Explanation: In the first paragraph, Wendy says she decided to walk "next to the large lake" because she wanted to "enjoy the cool wind." Option A perfectly paraphrases this. Option B is a wrong reference trap; the weather in her town was hot during the day, but she doesn't mention her house being hot. Option C is wrong logic; she walked next to the lake, but never mentions wanting to swim in it.
15 B - Explanation: In the second paragraph, Wendy says she "completely forgot" to put a special spray on to keep insects away. Option B matches this fact. Option A is a partial truth trap; the text mentions her walking shoes, but she says they were comfortable, not the wrong ones. Option C is a wrong logic trap; she forgot to put the spray on at home, she didn't leave it at the lake.
16 C - Explanation: In the third paragraph, the text states a mosquito was "sitting on my ankle" and "gave me a huge bite." Option C correctly paraphrases this as an insect biting her on the leg. Option A is a partial truth trap; her ankle hurt (itched), but it was because of the insect, not from walking too fast. Option B is wrong logic; the mosquito was above her shoe, she didn't step on it.
17 B - Explanation: In the final paragraph, Wendy says she "carefully put the white cream on the mosquito bite" and the itchy feeling stopped straight away. Option B correctly paraphrases this. Option A is a wrong logic trap; the cream was white, but she didn't use a cloth. Option C is a partial truth trap; her mother gave her the cream, but Wendy put it on herself—she didn't ask her mother to clean the bite.
18 A - Explanation: This question tests the final detail of the story. Wendy states, "Tomorrow evening, I am going to walk by the lake again". Option A matches this future plan perfectly. Option B is wrong logic because she already owns insect spray (she just forgot to use it this time) and isn't planning to buy new spray. Option C is a partial truth trap; her mother is in the story, but Wendy doesn't say her mother is coming on the walk.
Test 2
Questions 14-18
For each question, choose the correct answer.
A special cake for Buster
Fifteen-year-old Alex writes about making a birthday treat for his dog.
Fifteen-year-old Alex loves spending time with his pet dog, Buster. Next week, Buster is turning three years old. Alex wanted to celebrate this special day by making something nice for him. Instead of buying a cake from a shop, Alex decided to bake a healthy cake at home. He read on the internet that carrots and peanut butter are great ingredients for dogs.
On Saturday morning, Alex went to the kitchen to start baking. He chopped up some fresh carrots and mixed them with flour and eggs. Then, he added half a cup of peanut butter from the kitchen cupboard. The cake smelled wonderful while it was baking in the oven. Alex felt very proud of himself and couldn't wait to give a piece to Buster.
However, while the cake was cooling on the table, Alex looked closely at the jar of peanut butter. He read the label on the back and got a terrible shock. The peanut butter contained a lot of added sugar! Alex remembered reading online that sugar is very bad for dogs and can make them quite ill. He felt so disappointed, but he knew he couldn't let Buster eat any of the cake.
Alex immediately threw the whole cake into the rubbish bin. Then, he walked to the health food shop in town to buy a new jar of 100% natural peanut butter without any sugar. He returned home and carefully baked a second cake. When Buster tried it, he ate it very quickly!
Seeing how happy Buster was made Alex feel fantastic. The cake was a huge success. Next month, Alex's friend is having a birthday party for her dog, and Alex is planning to bake another healthy cake for them as a special present.
14 Why did Alex decide to bake a cake for Buster?
A He wanted to make a special treat for his dog's birthday.
B He bought some healthy dog food from a shop in town.
C His parents asked him to make something for the family.
15 What did Alex do while making the first cake?
A He used a special peanut butter from a health shop.
B He mixed carrots with ingredients from his kitchen.
C He gave Buster a piece of the cake straight from the oven.
16 Why was Alex worried when the cake was cooling?
A The cake smelled bad after it came out of the oven.
B He realised an ingredient in the cake could hurt his pet.
C Buster ate the whole cake before it was cold.
17 How did Alex solve his problem?
A He bought different peanut butter to make another cake.
B He washed the extra sugar off the first cake.
C He asked a shop worker to bake a cake for him.
18 What is Alex planning to do next month?
A buy a new pet dog for his best friend
B make a birthday cake for another dog
C have a big birthday party for Buster in town
Answer Key & Explanations
14 A - Explanation: The text says Buster is turning three and Alex "wanted to celebrate this special day by making something nice for him" (a special treat). Option B is a partial truth trap; he went to a shop in town later, but he didn't buy healthy dog food there at first. Option C uses wrong logic; it was Alex's own decision for his dog, not a request from his parents.
15 B - Explanation: The text states that he chopped carrots and mixed them with flour, eggs, and "peanut butter from the kitchen cupboard". Option A is a partial truth trap; he bought special peanut butter for the second cake, not the first one. Option C uses wrong logic; he didn't feed the first cake to Buster because it contained sugar.
16 B - Explanation: The text explains that the peanut butter had added sugar, which "can make them quite ill" (hurt his pet). Option A uses wrong logic; the text says the cake "smelled wonderful". Option C uses wrong logic; Buster didn't eat the cake because Alex threw it away.
17 A - Explanation: The text says Alex went to the health food shop to buy "a new jar of 100% natural peanut butter" and "baked a second cake." Option B uses wrong logic; he threw the first cake in the rubbish bin, he didn't wash it. Option C uses wrong reference; he bought the ingredient from a shop, but he baked the cake himself at home.
18 B - Explanation: In the final paragraph, the text says Alex's friend is having a dog party and "Alex is planning to bake another healthy cake for them". Option A uses wrong reference; he is baking a cake for his friend's dog, not buying a new dog. Option C is a partial truth trap; the party next month is for his friend's dog, not a party in town for Buster.
Test 3
Questions 14-18
For each question, choose the correct answer.
Walking your way to a healthy heart
16-year-old Bella writes about her favourite way to keep fit.
My name is Bella, and I am 16 years old. Every weekend, I go walking up the steep hills near my town. Some people like going to the gym to keep fit, but I think hiking in nature is much better. It is an amazing way to exercise your heart and your whole body. I am writing this blog post to share my thoughts on my favourite outdoor hobby.
There are many wonderful things about walking in the hills. The best part is definitely the fresh air. When you live in a busy town, the air is often dirty. But when you climb high up a hill, the air is clean and fresh. Breathing this clean air makes my lungs feel great, and it helps me relax after a long week of studying at school. I also love looking at the beautiful views from the top.
However, hiking can sometimes be dangerous if you aren't careful. The hills are often very steep, and the ground is full of loose rocks. If you step on a stone and it moves, you can easily fall over. Last month, I stepped on a round rock and hurt my ankle very badly. I couldn't walk fast for two weeks, and it was quite painful.
Because of this problem, I have some important advice for anyone who wants to try climbing hills. If you have weak ankles like me, you should always put a bandage around them before you start your walk. A strong bandage helps to keep your foot safe and stops it from turning the wrong way. If you remember to do this simple thing, you can enjoy a fantastic and safe day in the hills!
14 Why does Bella go hiking every weekend?
A She wants to find a good gym in nature.
B It is an excellent way to get her body fit.
C She likes to meet other people who walk.
15 What does Bella enjoy most about hiking?
A The clean air is very good for her body.
B The views of the busy town are beautiful.
C She can forget about her friends at school.
16 What problem did Bella have last month?
A A large rock fell down the steep hill and hit her.
B She had to stay at home for two whole months.
C She injured a part of her foot while she was walking.
17 What is Bella's advice for hikers?
A Stop climbing if your foot starts to feel weak.
B Buy some strong walking boots for your feet.
C Wear something to protect your ankles before climbing.
18 What is Bella doing in this text?
A explaining how to find the best hills to climb
B reviewing a physical activity and giving some safety advice
C telling a scary story about a terrible accident in the mountains
Answer Key & Explanations
14 B - Explanation: In the first paragraph, Bella says, "It is an amazing way to exercise your heart and your whole body." Option B correctly paraphrases this. Option A is a partial truth trap (the text mentions a gym, but Bella says hiking is better than the gym, she isn't looking for one in nature). Option C uses wrong logic (she walks in nature, but the text doesn't mention meeting other people).
15 A - Explanation: In the second paragraph, Bella states, "The best part is definitely the fresh air" and "Breathing this clean air makes my lungs feel great". Option A perfectly paraphrases this. Option B is a partial truth trap (she loves the views from the top, but the town is where the air is dirty). Option C is wrong logic (she hikes to relax after school, but doesn't mention forgetting her friends).
16 C - Explanation: In the third paragraph, Bella explains that she "stepped on a round rock and hurt my ankle very badly." Option C correctly describes this as injuring a part of her foot. Option A uses wrong logic (she stepped on the rock; it didn't fall on her). Option B is a partial truth (she couldn't walk fast for two weeks, not two months).
17 C - Explanation: In the final paragraph, Bella advises, "you should always put a bandage around them before you start your walk." Option C correctly paraphrases putting on a bandage as wearing something to protect your ankles. Option A is wrong logic (she says to prepare before you start, not stop when you feel weak). Option B is a wrong logic trap (she advises using a bandage, not buying boots).
18 B - Explanation: This is a global question testing the overall purpose of the blog. Throughout the text, Bella reviews the health benefits and dangers of hiking, and ends with advice on how to use a bandage to stay safe. Option B accurately describes this purpose. Option A is wrong logic (she doesn't explain where to find hills). Option C is a partial truth (she mentions hurting her ankle, but it is an informative review about fitness and safety, not just a scary story).
